Question Engine Surge: 2008 TSX

Hi -

I just joined this forum. I own a 2008 Black TSX with manual transmission and Nav system.

Has anyone experienced unintended engine surges with the TSX? That is, occasionally as I'm coming to a stop, with my feet on both the clutch and brake pedal, the engine RPMs will suddenly increase - 3000-4000 RPMs and on one occasion 5000-6000 RPMs. It stays up there for several seconds then recedes back to idle RPM. I'm usually in a lower gear or in neutral. It is an intermittent problem that I have not been able to duplicate.

The Dealership could not duplicate the problem either. They found nothing wrong and suggested that I might have been inadvertently engaging both the brake pedal and accelerator pedal during the braking process.

Maybe they're right, but I've been driving standard transmissions all my life, this would be a first. Besides, for the first year that I had the car (bought in 2007) I never experienced that problem. Lately it has seems to be occurring more frequently.

Any ideas?

The answer lies in your question:
The Dealership could not duplicate the problem either. They found nothing wrong and suggested that I might have been inadvertently engaging both the brake pedal and accelerator pedal during the braking process.
I say this because i used to do this when i first started driving my car
How long have you been driving manual for?
maybe you have a wide foot and happen to press both brake and accelerator pedal.
Just be more conscience when applying the brake and maybe the problem may go away... There are no service bulletins on the 08 Drive By Wire system but sometimes you never know.

oh, and welcome btw

your car is still a first gen if it's an 08. it's not a 2nd gen.

Could be due to downshifting.

Unhappy Engine Surge

Oops. Sorry about that xjohndoex. I wasn't sure what 1st Gen, 2nd Gen meant (didn't find it in the FAQ). What is the protocol? Design Stages? Manufacturing platform?

evertp1: Been driving for over 40-years (including Military vehicles) almost always vehicles with a manual transmission.

I picked up my TSX from the dealer today. No joy. They could not find anything wrong.

As I said earlier, the Dealership suggested I was inadvertently stepping on both the brake and accelerator pedal. On the ride home (a couple of miles) I tried deliberately to engage both pedals. No can do. The brake pedal engages above the accelerator pedal and it would take awfully large feet and a contortionist to engage both pedals effectively with one foot (the other is on the clutch). In my opinion, it is not in my range (size 10s with a D-width).

It was suggested I keep a log book in my car and make detailed notes whenever the engine again surges unintentionally.

04-08 is the 1st gen, some base design with minor changes. The 09 is the 2nd gen so if you're car isn't an 09+ it's a 1st gen.

As for your problem that is weird and only thing I can think of is the samething the dealer thought. I would keep the log and see if it's possibly happening under certain conditions you didn't notice before.

Crazy Bigfoot?

Thought I'd update this thread.

I've come to the conclusion that the problem was the "nut behind the wheel."

I've been keeping a log of the "engine surges" as suggested. Filled out a couple of pages of incidents.

Then one day, when coming to a quick stop at a traffic light, the engine surged. I looked down at my feet, and sure enough, my braking (right) foot was not only engaging the brake pedal but also the very top of the accelerator pedal!

Normally when I engage the brake pedal, I use the ball of my foot (upper portion of my foot). But when making a quick stop, I tend to use my entire foot (pedal in the center of my foot). It is then when I find, if I'm not careful, I can engage not only the brake pedal, but also the upper portion of the accelerator pedal. Duh.

I've been paying attention to my foot placement since then (about a month ago). So far, no "engine surges." Yet.

Good to hear that it's not a mechanical fault.
