I just think it's more logical because when you brake hard your momentum forces your body forward so to downshift you would continue that momentum by pushing the lever forward. The same would be true when accelerating hard, you're pushed into your seat so you bring the lever with you instead of pushing against your momentum. i guess this is why the race cars are designed this way, and our civilized daily drivers are designed differently.

by the way, you're right, all those other cars do it like ours except for BMW and VW with their DSG.
