I think you know the answer to you question but I will tell you my own experience with custom exhausts. I took both resonaters out, put a pipe and got magnaflow mafflers and chrom tips. I drove it like that for a year or so and all that time I had my eyes on aftermarket cat-back exhaust and finely changed it to Tananbe Touring. So I'll say do it once, do it right.
