Just changed over to Mobil 1 about 2 weeks ago. I've noticed an increase of a little more than 1/2-3/4 mpg avg more since the switch. I figured I need to get 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 mpg avg more compared to reg oil to break even on the $21 for mobil 1 after 5000 miles.

I use regular conventional oil in my car. Not to start a huge debate on the topic of oil... but you don't have to use synthetic oil on your car.

Any syn oil or blend syn oil is over kill for the TSX. 99.9% of us can use normal oil and reg maint routine without any problems for 100,000 miles. I’m keeping my TSX to around 175,000, I’m pretty sure a lifetime of syn oil will make a big difference.
Using syn oil makes us feel better like getting the best car sound system or the highest rated plasma TV or Car and Driver’s 10 best vehicles 3 years in a row. Getting the regular what ever stuff is just not good enough.

I agree that most people use synthetics because it makes them "sleep better at night". It comes down to personal preference.
I do not think, however, that a lifetime of synthetic oil will make your car run any better at 175k than at 10k.... but like I said, it's all personal preference.

when i used to own my integra back in the days, me and my friend did a tune up on both our cars at 30K miles. upon removal of the valve cover we noticed a big difference in engine color. mine been on synthetic since first oil change and his engine using conventional oil since brand new. mine has the aluminum color and his engine's color is brownish. performance wise can't really tell but he said mine runs smoother than his. and my brothers 87 nissan sentra with almost 200k miles, engine color is just like normal aluminum, no brownish color at all.

nice, I was going back and forth between that and mobil one, went with mobil one for now since you cant buy amsoil at any old store.
are you using their oil filter as well or just the oil.
my dad only uses amsoil too in his vehicles and he has two diesels. he has all kinds of information on oil filters and oils.

I hear amsoil is really good and just as good as motul. Its slightly cheaper than the cheaper motul (about $10/L at Can Tire)
Im using mobil1....motul is too rich for my blood.

Heres another question since it seems ppl have been switching engine oils back and forth.. is it bad for your car to keep changing to different brands and types of oil? My friend said to me since ur using the higher end motul.. once you use it you should change.. it does get quite expensive but its ok since i love my car..

I think as long as the motor oil (reg, blend, full syn) and oil filter meets or exceeds Honda/Acura recommendations and maintaining normal oil change intervals; I don't see why changing oil types will make a difference.

Ok because i started off with the 3 free oil changes for reg oil from the Acura dealership then changed over lol...

I have been using Mobil1 since '88. I saw a diff as indicated by bimmer1 early on in this thread at 190k with a '87 Accord when adjusting the valves, as clean as first assembled. In a nut shell, I change at 10k & do it myself. Fact: there is more 'oil' in syn (of any make) than in dino oil & it will not 'burn off' at higher temps. One can pay more to get 'better' syn but other than racing conditions it is necessary?
The biggest step or improvement is to step up to syn. I feel that even under 'normal' usage syn will make a diff(maybe small for <100k) in the regular operation of an engine.

Been using Valvoline Racing Synthetic, It burns quicker though being actual race oil... need to do changes every 2.5-3 k...and cant go over at all.... but its not too badly priced and car runs great on it... + Not Street Legal :mardi:

Mobil1 for 2 years, but last change happened to try Royal Purple. No way I could tell any difference in 1 oil change and not sure if I could ever tell regardless even over longer period of time.
But I sleep well regardless, esp with a drink or two every night....

factory spec is what, 5w-20? the motor likes a thin oil. and personally, i am uncomfortable with petroleum oils and the factory service intervals (10k oil, 20k filter!).
i'm on the amsoil bandwagon (0w-30, their filter, every 10k). their MTF in the 6MT as well. mileage is up 1+ mpg. i heartily recommend both, having used amsoil in a lot of other applications as well.
that said, mobil 1 5w-30 is a fine choice too. my wife drives the piss out of the car and we will own it forever, so i am willing to invest a little in its future. at 20mos old it has 52k on it.
and don't forget the importance of quality filtration!

I don't want to get into an oil debate, but what makes you uncomfortable about petroleum oils and following the "normal" maintenance schedule?

10k OCI with 20k FCI seems outrageous. 10k is a pretty long time for any oil, especially if you're leaving the dirty filter in there! does anyone reading this actually change filters every other 10k? the OEM filter is tiny!
personally, I opt for the improved longevity of synthetics given the convenience of extended drain intervals. i also always change the filter with the oil.

i'd love to see a similar study on dino oils. if name-brand synths are done at 12-15k, it makes me wonder.

10k OCI with 20k FCI only seems outrageous because it goes against what people believe is right... although I'd be curious to see what oil tests reveal about the oil.
I agree that there are very few tests and studies done (mostly done by individuals)... but then again, the petroleum industry doesn't want the consumer to know any different.
The links you provide offer some good information, but it's far from coming up with conclusive results. They only use one vehicle and one driver, which means that all the tests prove is that for the type of driving he does with his car. There are so many variables that would affect the oil condition that his tests only scratch the surface.
In addition, if you read his OCI sidebar, he recommends that the best OCI is determined by using one of two methods... both of which require periodic oil testing. The price of testing diminishes any cost savings of extended OCIs with synthetics.
If you go to www.bobistheoilguy.com, you'll find all kinds of testing people have done with conventional oil... maybe not quite as pretty looking as the pages you reference.
