View Full Version : Amateur Photography! NO PS allowed!! (inspired by Shay)
I've always wanted to post some pics that I took when I have a camera. But since I don't have PS (photoshop), my pics look like crap. I want a thread dedictaed to "BACK TO THE BASICS". NO photoshop, no edit, no nothing. Just RAW pictures!! Post away, I want to see what people can do with just a camera, of course there's exposres and shutter speed and such, but I don't even know how to adjust...so post away!!

Hey Benz, you don't need PhotoShop or any other fancy tools to take a good pic - they help, but your photos will only be as good as the starting image. I think proper composition makes a huge difference in an image, as it provides a focal point for the image that draws the viewer in. Two simple things I learned that I think make a huge difference are:
1) Don't be afraid to get in close to a subject, particularly if it's a person and they're the focal point. I find most people tend to keep the people or subjects small while leaving far too much landscape or background, as in these pictures:
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/13/nikon904db7.jpg
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/166/nikon013kc3.jpg
Try zooming in (or walking in) closer to your subjects to capture them and to convey more emotion about them.
2) Second, learn about the rule of thirds. Here's the first response from Google: http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/compose_expose/thirds.html. Basically, don't center all your subjects, but place them off center at the intersection of the points that you would have if you divided your image into thirds both vertically and horizontally.
With respect to specific criticisms about your pictures, I find that car pictures aren't that interesting when taken from eye level, and full body shots are pretty boring. Try getting in lower and try focusing in on specific parts of the car. Also try walking around the car to see what impact the lighting has as well.
Finally, experiment and shoot a lot! I might only get one good shot for every ten that I take, where everything just comes together properly. Thankfully this is so much easier and cheaper with digital than it is with film. I'm still learning something every time I pull my camera out. Browse the camera and photography forums and see what pictures other people take and try to understand what makes their pictures attractive or unattractive to you.
I'm sure Neo and DigitalHorizon have a bunch more tips, and I hope they chime in so I can learn something from them too. Hope this was helpful!

I chose these out of the hundreds I took, and they still look like crap!! I hope someone can teach me or just guide me to take better pics!
Don't be too hard on yourself! You took some nice shots!
The thing is, it doesn't really have to do with what CAMERA you have, what makes a good shot is the photographer's EYE! I mean, take me for example, I didn't photoshop ANY of the pix I took in the photo thread that I posted! All of those were taken as point and shoot! No adjusting of lens or anything! To make it even more crazy, it was all done with my camera PHONE!!!! So, there really isn't much of a trick to it! You see something that is nice and beautiful and you just CAPTURE it! That's me, anyway! But pictures are all different and can be taken differently!
Believe me, if I had the same kind of equipment some of these awesome photographers have on this site, I'd be in the same level as them! Maybe even BETTER! hahaha jk guys ;) :p But I would definitely be in the same running as them! All that really matters, is how you want to take the pictures! Regardless of the outcome, if you see any kind of beauty in it...then it's all good!
I would post some pix not photoshopped on this thread, but I already posted the pix I've taken that I like in that other thread! hehe But I'll see what I can add! And for the record, I don't use photoshop! I need that bad tho! haha I have this generic photo editor, but all I do with that is change the color and brightness! haha Nothing too extensive!

And I agree with 06tsx...when you photoshop, you lose the NATURAL beauty that is captured from the camera! It's best to capture the ESSENCE and BEAUTY of the picture by its natural state!
And don't ASSUME that a lot of people use photoshop because not all do! Just because it looks TOO amazing, doesn't mean it's been altered! You can tell that you can capture beauty by itself from the many photos posted on here! Yeah, most of the car pictures are pretty much photoshopped and edited to some degree, but that's for SHOW! It's a totally different shot! Car pictures are different when it comes to nature, architectural pieces, abstract, etc! There's NO one way of taking pix! There's digital photography and all the other types of photography! Depending on what you're capturing is the best way to know what type of technique to use!
And nice pix 06tsx and lokman!

Photoshop is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, if you shoot in RAW using a digital camera, Photoshop (or something similar) might be an essential part of processing the photo. All that usually means is do is to crop the image (if required), add some sharpening and apply color correction. Photoshop does not mean you have to be editing out all the little details to make it better!

Thanks alot man. I tired that rule of third thing. I actually don't like taking pics where the center is the subject. But at often times, I only have so much time to take that pic or shoot on the subject, that I want to capture the whole and have a reminder of it. I tried taking some but they didn't turn out too great.
Do you have any picture forum to suggest?? I don't know. EVerytime I look at people's pic, all I think it, I could've done that. I can copy the angle or position no problem, but I never tried to do it. Or, I want to develop my own style. ANd as for the cars, I don't know, I find that full body pics are boring too, but they look the best. Sometimes when you take pics of only the headlights, or emblem, it looks weird kind of in a way, or people don't know what you are shooting. Sometimes, I don't know how other achieve their position of the pictures they take as well..it's very confusin!
I hope Neo and DH will chime in too!!

Ya, I believe it's the photographer too! But I mean, with a nice enough camera, like a Typcial SLR, a decent photographer can suddenly become a better one. Equipments do count. If i had a SLR, i will actually put some efforts into learning how to take pics. It's just me, when I don't have the equipment I want, I don't bother with the skills....:(
But ya, you should try and borrow one and shoot some pics!!

I hear you on the time thing - sometimes you only have a few seconds to get a shot, and you don't have enough time to get that perfect shot. That's why I shoot as many as I can, varying the composition a bit, hoping that one of them will turn out to be a great shot instead of just an average shot.
As for different photography forums, I check out www.photography-on-the.net, but that's only because I'm a Canon user. Still, there's more than enough there to wow me whenever I visit. You'll probably find the same on Nikon forums, or browse through Flickr's most interesting pictures.
Lastly, don't worry about what your pics look like right now - go out there and shoot and have fun, and read and learn. In time you will develop your eye and your style. Like I said, I'm still learning!

Cloud, Forge Fire, and Stick were quick shots because the groups I was in were moving along and I couldn't dally to shoot additional shots.
The Japanese Flower Arrangement was shot at the Phipps in Pittsburgh and is one of a series of arrangements there at that time for a competition.

These five shots of a Chipmunk are from 47 shots of the critter I did that day. Of the five, you choose the one you like best.
Benz, the point as posted by others in this thread is to shoot, shoot, and shoot. Digital film is inexpensive. You'll forget the "rules" again and again but they will sink in.
Infanview is a free program available for down load and is a good photo editiing program.
You could also find someone that owns a Minolta point and shoot and have them burn a copy of Dimage Viewer for you. It has tonecurves and histogram, constrast, and satuation adjustment and is simple to use. Quick and dirty fixes are esay and in many cases are all you need to make a photo better.
I also use Arc Soft's Photostudio 2000 for quick, esay, and dirty red eye fixes. It came free with many digital cameras and some friend, if they have a copy, could burn a CD for you.

well I just decided on my own that cropping was allowed. These photos were resized and a few were cropped but no had anything altered color and sharpness wise in photoshop. To me they are really to dark. Ice hockey was probably not the thing to use to play along in this thread with but it is the only thing I have shot recently. I might make another thread of the same pictures with them edited since shooting hockey is really hard to do with the limited light in arenas.

I agree with most on this thread. With todays camera take as many pictures as you can and then filter them when you get back home. You will most likely delete 75-80% of the pics and it wont cost you anything.

hahahaha dope dope! Turned out good! Like I said...MODEL pose like what?! hahaha :p
Quick Picture of the beach at sunset.
I agree with most on this thread. With todays camera take as many pictures as you can and then filter them when you get back home. You will most likely delete 75-80% of the pics and it wont cost you anything.
Good luck.
Nice!

WOW! Those are AMAZING pix!!!! I think I'll post these in the "Travel Pix" thread unless you already have in the past! Those would be perfect in that thread!!!! I'm just blown away by the night shots! The lights are so VIBRANT! Love it!

uhhhhhhh...because there is already a thread for "member cars"....this thread got so RANDOM! :rotz: Not trying to hate, but you tend to make EVERY thread/forum into a POSTwhore thread! Can you please refrain from that?! Thanks!

Um...who's the attention whore here?? I don't think I postwhored this thread at all, I didn't even make up random post. I simply reply others posts since this is my thread and I make comments to encourage others to post. Maybe some members don't want to post their cars in the Member's car thread for everyone to see because maybe their picture taking skills are not at a level which they are satisfy, like myself. That's why I started this thread, so people won't make comments like, take better pics of your car, or, get a better camera. This thread is simply for people posting pics which they do not think is of a professional level

for a few years, i worked for a music webzine and took pics of bands live while interviewing them or reviewing cds. but i ended up stopping mostly b/c of the time, cost (developing actual film), etc...i still love the music, but i just don't have the energy to go to a lot of shows and fight with the crowds to snap pics.
anyways, here are some that i took during those few years in NYC. most of these are either hardcore, metal, or punk bands if you're not familiar with them.
