View Full Version : Going into 2nd Gear feels weird, like the gearbox is shifting on ridges.

Sometimes When i shift from 1st to 2nd, it does not feel as smooth as the other gears. it feels like its (i.e. the gearbox) shifting on ridges...its not one smooth, quick motion, but feels very "ridgity".
this also only happens when im in motion...when im at a stop and shift from 1st to 2nd, its smooth quick and concise....
sometimes when i stop and move from 2nd to 1st it does that too, but not as often.

This has been discussed many many times if you did a search. Try to press on the accel a bit while your changing gears so that the gas doesnt completely cut off by the Drive by wire thottle. Another thing, you should never change 2nd to 1st gear while your in motion

Yes, my second gear is notchy too. Feels like you are pushing the shifter in a pile of small rocks. Sometimes it goes in as smooth as butter but there are times where it feels like it is not completely in gear (99%) but for some reason it is. It is a common problem with Honda's 6MT gearbox especially with the RSX TypeS.
The reason it feels notchy when you move from 2nd and 1st is most likely you are not at a complete stop. Your car is probably still moving forward but at a very low speed. (under 10 km/hr) If that was the case, I would just accelerate from 2nd gear rather than 1st gear. I only downshift to 1st if I am at a complete stop.

Another question I want to ask you guys. My car is in NEUTRAL and is slowly moving backward and then I try to shift to REVERSE while the car is moving backward... my gear grinds. It seem like I have to be at a complete STOP before I can shift to Reverse. Is that normal???

^ haha, i did that couple of times before. I try to avoid putting in R before a complete stop.

this does happen while shifting in cold weather before the coolant temp is at normal operating temp.
alternatively, during the 1-2 shift, see if it helps by avoiding to push the stick all the way to the left while shifting.
try easing the shift through the 1-2 gates, rather than forcing it through.
this does help me.

Not to bring this thread back from the dead and my question is totally unrelated (too lazy to start a new thread) but.... here is my quick question.
If you are parking your car on an incline, which gear do you put it in? Some ppl say 1st gear and other say 3rd. Which one is it?

I put it in 1st, and the manual says 1st (I think). But it should be okay to put it in any other gears.
But I like the angle of the shifter when it's in the 1st gear :D

It says in the tsx owners manual to be at a complete stop when putting the gear into reverse. Grinding will happen everytime if your moving.

I never do this because when I start up I forget its in gear and I stall. I've done this about 3 times already so I just use the e-brake.

It's better/safer to use gear for parking as well. Those e-brakes can fail on you and call for a disaster. Especially in the cold winter, those metals etc can shrink and let it loose, and there goes your vehicle if on hill. :(
Of course, unless you have a auto starter, I'd definitely practice putting in gear when parking.

Exactly, I don't want to come back and then notice my car at the bottom of the hill. Sometimes, if you don't pull your e-brake hard enough, there is a chance your car will roll down the hill too. I wouldn't just depend on the e-brake alone.
