Radar detectors and laser detectors are LEGAL to use in British Columbia, but not in Manitoba, New Brunswick; Newfoundland, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_detector
Canada (Illegal:Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories <b>Legal:</b> Alberta, <b>British Columbia</b>, Saskatchewan): Regardless of whether they are used or not, police there may confiscate radar detectors, operational or not, and impose substantial fines.
I think they are legal.

Hey dawg.
You can't drive like a maniac in Vancouver because every 75 meters or so it's an intersection.
Think of driving up spadina from front to bloor with no left turn lanes. Now Vancouver is like that all across the city.
Only problem I see is since the states is so close and my GF loves to shop there, I can use it there as well as on Knight street just before the bridge...they cops are tricky tricky. Downhill (like the finch and don mills hill but steeper) they expect you to go 50. Going the opposite side uphill, 50 as well. They lay down lotsa speed traps there. Lucky speeding tickets in Vancouver do not count towards insurance hikes.

The cops were near the foot of Knight St. bridge yesterday early afternoon. Good thing I slowed down.

yes and no..
u will pay insurance premiums after u have more 1 tix in one year.
the charged to you on another bill so it's not part of ur insurance fee.
I'm pretty sure it is legal to have one in BC.
Is it worth it?... in BC I say yes. They don't have the latest detection equipment Ontario has, so you might get better bang for the buck with it there. Get out of 1 ticket and it can pay for itself.
However, even the top of the line V1 is no match for laser, so you're never bullet proof. Always drive heads up either way.

Radar detectors are illegal in Ontario.
well...not all of the police have laser speed guns...so even if you get away with detecting the regular gun that they use the majority of the time..it still be good no?

I know they're illegal in Ontario... I've been caught before. Detectors have saved me and burned me; it's up to the individual if you want to take the risk. For me, not anymore. Cops really frown on detectors and go out of their way (more then usual) to try and burn you. I know too many stories 1st and 2nd hand.
There's more then 2 types of "guns" and the techology is constantly evolving. If you do decide to get one I'd suggest buying the best available because a $99 unit will just let you know when you neighbour is warming up a burrito in the microwave.

Hahah awesome...burritos hmmm.
thanks for the tips...much appreciated :)
My dad gave me a radar detector when i was younger in TO. Was kinda useless as I didn't even know what it did back int he days.
I'm having a hard time justifying a radar detector (V1's can cost upwards of $500 CDN) soley because it's a pain in the butt to always put it on and off each time I get out of the car (break ins are very common in vancouver).

^ so breakins are rare in toronto?

Yup. My Gf was freaking out on me leaving my man purse in her car when i first came to visit vancouver. She told me people break into cars alot. It's not as common in TO.
Valentine 1 - Gets my full recommendation despite of technical legalities. Apart from having multi-direction detection that no other detector has, it also has a lifetime upgrade offer to ensure you always have the latest device on board.
Even I have one all the way down under.

guys.....i am confusing.......
back to topic, we can have radar detector on our car in BC, but will cops pull u over and take your detector away if we using it???
Eveytime i talk to police, they were cool with it. I checked and it's legal in BC!
the point is, it's slows you down, so your not breaking the law, to them it's doing the job of slowing you down,(especially with all those false alarms) they rather catch the guy that is speeding!

Cyde... please tell us the story about your Radar Detector Detector Detector. :D
also known as VG2
Police has Ka-radar => I have radar detector => Police have VG "sensor to detect if people using radar detector" aka Radar detector detector" => I also have VG2 which detects the use of a radar detector detector, and gose into a stealth mode to prevent detection. so it a radar detector detector detector! lol

^ is the radar detector detector detector VG2 is a built in function of Valentine 1 or passport??
not on the valentine 1, but they do have it on all the new passports
valentine 1 has good feedback but bad range
passports and belltronics have amazing range and sensitivity but you kinda have to learn what the messages mean in relation to what you are doing.
(valentine patented any direction display, so no one els can have one)

as of now......which radar detector should be the best bang for the buck?
i'm looking for something which can detect traffic police who hide in bushes and shoot their radar/laser guns from a distance...
also....is it common for the police in vancouver to use laser?
i receieved two speeding tickets this year and it got me banned from driving because i'm still an N....
it's so horrible how the police would set up speed traps on every road into UBC...
almost every one of my classmates who drive have got a ticket on marine drive already...i mean why would they target students?@@
anyhow... once i get my license back...i'll be on a two year probation and will have to wait another two year before i get my class 5....
during that two year probation i'm not allowed to get any tickets or else they'll suspend me from driving again and i will have to start my 2 year cycle again....
i don't want to get another ticket for doing 90 in the 80 zone and waste so much time and money(paying for tickets, reinstallment fees) OMG!!!
i'm willing to spend around 400-500$ for a radar detector but if there is a radar detector which is just as function but costs less that'll be my choice...
can ppl help me with which radar detector i should get?
i just don't wanna get banned from driving again@@
A bang for the buck radar detector will let you know when someone is walking into the automatic doors of your local grocery store. It will also pave the way for you to get a ticket that will more than offset any money you save.
V1's have consistently been one of the best radar detectors around, but this technology evolves pretty fast so you might want to search the net for current info.
