you know how your cruisin on the freeway and you notice the car behind you going to cut you off (i was going 85 not like i was going slow or anything), so i speed up cuz i know hes going for it just to piss em off, and he tries to cut in front of me not knowing that im right next to him so i honk the sh1t out of em then slow down a bit so i can high beam him. ended up sticking on his ass for a good minute or so at like 95mph with my high beams, then i turn em off and slow down and he flashs his emergency lights, is there a meaning behind doing that? kinda just pissed me off some more =X

edit: sorry but is this supposed to be in off topic section :x, sorry if it is

This just means he's won "the race".. Usually if you're doing a street drag race, and a car wins and they want to tell the other car that the race is over and he won, he would turn on his emergency lights.

Basically he is telling you that he won the little game you two were having.

Emergency lights as in hazzards usually is ricer talk for, "i beat you in the race so bad you can see my taillights." Pretty much a gay fast and the furious thing. Don't worry about people that win "races" that aren't even races.

yep... had a riced out old school celica do that to me once, so then I did something stupid, and ended up really embarassing him, especially considering I was racing him with 2 pairs of ski's and a snowboard on the roof

Well, if it's quite obvious you weren't racing against him, then I think it's the sign to thank you for letting them in the lane. I was driving on a two lane road two weekends ago and I slowed down to let an NSX pass me - there was no way I could race him, and he flashed his hazard lights at me after I slowed down and pulled over a bit to let him pass.

When i flash the emergency blinkers on the hwy, I'm basically telling the driver behind me that traffic in front has come to an abrupt stop and i'm slowing down, so he/she should be too. That's how i was taught.

i was in my moms ml63 amg.. (500hp SUV) and this riced out civic pulls up next to me.. puts it in gear, honks 3 times, and takes off while im not budging and put his hazzards on... some people pick on SUV's because thats all they can beat. Now if he didnt go about turning at the next stop light i would have beat him by limos and busses.

hahahahahaaha

Another meaning for that (without any racing involved prior) is to make sure people know where you are when they are following you. Like if you are rolling with 2-3 cars or more and you happen to be the leader of the pack, to prevent losing any of your friends you do signals to communicate!

So, for that purpose, flashing your hazards is to help the person following behind you to keep track of where you are....just in case you lose each other through changing lanes and people cutting you off or if you drive too fast for them! hehe :grinno:

That's the APPROPRIATE and CORRECT way for using hazards! hehe :werd:

European drivers' common signaling:

1) 3 flashes of hazard lights = "Thank you" (can be used for different things, but usually when car 1 let's car 2 pass him by freeing the lane it was using.)
It can also sometimes mean, "take care" if 2 cars have been driving together and they're separating.

2) 2 flashes of high beams (for opposite traffic) = watch out, cops controlling traffic or using radar ahead.

we use that here in FL

We use that in Korea, well, 10 yrs ago they did. Not sure about nowadays.

I never knew about this "I won the race" signalling existed. hence, I accidently did flash when I wanted to say "thank you".
I might have offended some1. :tardsmash

In my book, 3 blinks of hazard lights says clearly "thank you", and if somebody misunderstands it, that's their problem.
I didn't come up with this rule, it's been in existence and in practice in Europe for at least 3 decades.

So don't worry about offending anyone... ;)

I never knew any of this existed!! I never seen people flash emergency lights before. But I DO wish people would want me about cops ahead with radar!! Everyone is so selfish here.

I agree, and disagree at the same time... Didnt one of the news sources show that this guy is making twice as much as everyone else, He was barley a cop, basically he was Corzines Driver, the cop part was just so he could flash the lights... Sorry but the whole systems such bullshit... Goveners and Cops Included, Honest guys like you are getting shit, and some of these guys, especially the Nassau County Cops where I live, are getting way more then deserved.

yea the guy whos corzines driver is a state trooper. granted he makes more money cause hes with the governor 24 hrs a day. so he is making a killing due to overtime. all im saying is the governor had no reason for emergency lights and the trooper has to do what he says and the governors cabinet staff....so basically the governor caused his own accident. I just feel bad for the trooper cause someone has to be the fall guy...its not gonna be the governor ya know

We both completly agree then that the Governor had no reason for emergency lights.... however im saying this troopers far from innocent, because half the reason he has his job is so he could turn on the emergency lights... though im not saying I wouldn't do the same... a real nice pay check in exchange for flipping on the lights and sirens...

Same time though as you said, Its not like he really had a huge choice if he wanted to keep that pay check coming... A State trooper cant just sit there and say im not driving until you buckle up to the governor, and obey all traffic laws when told not to...if he did that Corzine would just find another Trooper to be his driver... simple as that.

However once again, the official rule is that A State Trooper driving the Governor, can flip on the Emergency Lights and break traffic laws, when they personally feel it is needed... so it was at least at an official level "His Discretion" which means hes f**ked

As far as the less serious aspect of it, its usually just is people saying that they "beat you". I've had a CL type S do it to me on the parkway, no big deal.

Peregrine

well, then I assume the 3 flashes of emergency lights just serve as a general acknowledgement. When 1 driver let's another driver pass, the other "acknowledges" that, which in essence means "thank you". When racers do it, the winning one acknowledges victory by flashing the emerg. lights. I guess you just use common sense to interpret it then.

why not just reach out the window and give the guy a thumbs down if u beat him in a race?

Because you cant continue masturbating to the fact that your 94 Civic with the pep boys taillights and the Coffee Can exhaust just beat a 4 Door Acura TSX that wasnt even trying to race you, and hole the steering wheel at the same time.

no i mean if u beat someone in a race yourself...why flash any type of lights just roll ur window down give a thumbs down and continue driving like nothing happened lol...i mean im dating myself here but back in the day in my mustangs when street racing was big around here we used to give thumbs down and did the 4 ways thing but that was in a real race...like 1/4 mile race or off a light not doing 75 on a highway and punching it next to a car for no reason other to get in front of him and than cut him off...thats not racing thats being a dick head.
