View Full Version : turn on car with button?

hmm... i know i must sound crazy... but is there any way to make car turn on itself with the push of a button? or better yet just entering the car? e.g. the cadillac xlr turns on with the push of a button... as long as the "key fob" is in the car.
obviously a remote start can turn on the car.... but they shut off the car if you do not put the key in the ignition...
any ideas? anybody done this?
thanks:)

I assume you're asking specifically about the TSX. I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" -- I don't think you can make the car do anything close to that.

hmm... i wonder how much difference there would be in the install for the tsx.... ???? any ideas?
how about making the car just turn on when im inside? :-D i wish...
when doing something like this... how worried would i have to be about somebody breaking in the car and pushing the button and driving off???
thanks guys/gals...

Pretty much the same concept.
No worries, as you can wire it to require you to still have your key in the ignition (in the on position) to start the car (then push the button for it to start).

I assume you are also asking about a keyfob sensing system like on various M-B, LS430, XLR and Prius. Where the car auto-detects the fob that never leaves your pocket. Since it needs actual key recognition (and not just a start switch), it's very unlikely to be available in the aftermarket, since car manfs would never release their encoding systems, since it would give the thieves the ability to make their own keys.

j/w is it possible to wire it so the key is NOT required? - and if it were to be done this way... if the car is broken into wouldnt the engine be disabled from the factory alarm? or would the button essentially override the alarm?
thanks!

hmm interesting... maybe i should create my own system :-D (if only i had the brains to do it)
thanks for the info.... it would be great to have a system like that..but not gonna happen :)

Why would anybody want that? I thought the point was to avoid needing to put the key in the ignition. :donno:

yep..thats why i asked about being able to use it without a key... on the other hand i dont knwo if i would do this if my car is going to be that much easier to steal... afterall i love the car :)
i love all the high tech things i can have in a car... larchmont anything else you can think of i need to put in my car? haha... i have the computer...tv tuner (using nav screen) dvd... etc.... im putting in the XM Commander in the "not an ashtray" area.. anything else?
thx

Yeah -- "haha" is about right when you're asking me about something like this.
Can't think of anything else besides that great idea I gave you about that vanilla-aroma thing. :Puke:
I wondered right away about the theft thing -- I figured either I was missing something or maybe you're from someplace where they don't steal cars or whatever..... :donno: .....except I remember it seemed you were from somewhere around the Detroit area.
Nothing against Detroit -- I'd wonder the same thing if it was New York. Or Philadelphia. Or Chicago. Or LA. Or.....just about anywhere.
Even Larchmont. :D

indeed.... detroit area... well suberbs - the city i live in.. supposedly "27th safest city in america, and safest in michigan" i say bullshit to that one... lol... but still its not like i dont drive around to other places and a car is always at risk of being stolen, so if i were to do this, i would need to be sure that it is going to have teh same security as it would with a key....

well here is what i am thinking at the moment.... and yes we all know i am crazy but aside from that...
i can put a remote starter with the alarm.... and use the fob from the remote to unlock/disarm the system... and using a push button... under the dash would turn on the car, but without putting the key in the ignition
as far as worrying about somebody stealing the car... if the car is broken into the alarm would disable the ignition...
in addition to this, the viper systems have gps telematics if i am not mistaken... and has the remote started/alarm etc built into it...and can be tracked by satellite and can be shutdown also...
so i would be able to turn on my car with the button and still not worry about it being stolen

Doesn't sound too crazy at all. :D
Except: Why would you want that either?? If you need the fob anyway, I don't see what's such an advantage about this that would make it worth doing. :donno:

well... just the fob to unlock the doors and disarm the system... but its all to show off... its just as easy to put the key in and turn it as it is to push a button..but pushing a button is just a show off tool:D

How does that work? How do you get into the car, and then what makes it secure if you can start it with a button?
Fingerprint recognition? :D

i dunno how the s2000 works...but if you want to give me one to play with ill take it

lol
hmm fingerprint recognition... how about a retinal scan? no i like fingerprint... just touch the door lock and it would unlock...push the button scans ur finger and starts... it would be just wonderful :-D

I'm pretty sure the ignition in the S2k has the I and II positions, and the button replaces the III (crank) position. You still need the key in the ignition, in II, to use the start button.

The Caddy XLR has something like it - there's no mechanical door handle, just a heat-sentitive touchpad that electronically unlatches the door. It only works if the keyfob is in range.

Yeah, I think they just put the button in to emulate race cars. I read a book on usability and design where they explained that cars used to have start buttons, but they changed to the 3-position key because it's much more natural and logical.
We're starting to see start buttons on more cars now, and not just hybrids. The Aston Martin DB9 has one, and also an AT with no gearshift, just separate P, R, N, D buttons on the centre stack (and shift paddles).

Hmm... i need opinions on this one... i got the push button from ignited, and a switch...the switch will turn on the power to the car and the button will start it, but i dont know where to have them mounted. i was originally thinking about mounting them in the 2 slots next to the VSA and the sunroof buttons.... but the switch doesnt fit in there.. and the push button is too wide.
Then I got to thinking about the other switches I have - there is going to be the switch for the valet mode for the alarm system. Ontop of that I already have a switch to turn on and off the computer in the trunk, and another switch to turn the tv tuner/rear view camera on and off.
So there are 4 switches and one push button. Where should I mount those?
Keep in mind I do not want to have the switch for the power to the car and the push button near the passanger...or anywhere where it will be easily bumped...dont want to turn off the car while driving on the highway going 70mph (or more :-D )
i will probably use the switches available at ignitedperformace.com
thanks for any input you may have...

how bout using two of those empty slots by the VSA, just cut out the part that separates the two and make one large opening. Then make a custom panel to cover up what's not covered by the switch.
vp911
05-23-2004, 01:23 PM
wanna make my custom panel :-D
what material would I use? What about the million other switches... to have them all next to each other?
push button
power for car
computer
tv tuner
valet for alarm
thanks :)

Uh.....
Maybe wire them all up in your arm rest storage compartment?
How big are all those buttons?
vp911
05-23-2004, 06:29 PM
i havnt measured them.... i will if you want...but i think that is a great idea... the top part of the arm rest.... where the coin holder would be... it would hold all of them..and the wires can be run under the rest of the console to the dash... :-D
thanks!

Another idea is to have them lined up on the silver trim on the driver side...use toggle switches and it'll be like a NASCAR car :D
You able to take a picture of the buttons? Just to give an idea how large they are..

http://www.ignitedperformance.com/u_product_static.asp?intCatalogID=5
theres a pic from where i bought them from.... thats only the top half...the part that has to be behind the dash is shown in the "rubber toggle switch"
these switches will fit in the slots next to the vsa and sunroof buttons...but i would have to make another plate of some sort to make them fit properly... im looking for the easy way out :-D
TSX 'R' US
05-24-2004, 12:14 AM
Hmm...seems like the armrest is the easiest way to go to make them all fit..
vp911
05-24-2004, 01:06 AM
yep... so i would put them in...and would i just drill a hole through the bin to run the wires to the dash? possibly put the hole next to the cig ligther in there?
as far as the switches are concerned.... if they are loose...any suggestions on holding them in place? some sort of glue...super glue or something?
thanks

He's not really turning his TSX into a NASCAR... I was just using it as an example of where their toggle switches are inside the car.
The Realtime TSX has theirs by the armrest.

I don't think it's bad, just that a lot of people think it's dumb. :D
Oh, it also might be bad if you happen not to want your car stolen.
j/k -- IMO if you like the idea and are interested to do it, and if you really know about the possible security problem and take care of it somehow, well, why not?
