Just remember that the Japanese cars were laughed at one time long ago. Korea has come a long way and keeps improving. At this year's Chicago Auto Show and on Thursday at the Pittsburgh Auto Show I sat in an Amanti. The cabin is very plush and nice with lot of features. I would consider it if it didn't drive and ride like a Buick. A 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty is very attractive. Sure beats Toyota's warranty and the Cam drives and rides like a Buick too. It was handling that brought me to the TSX, then the reliability, content, and price. The TL and RL handling were too heavy for me.

The new Elantra, kinda looks like it has the rear of a newer Lexus IS, from a distance a person might think its a Lexus IS. While the Genesis concept, the shape resembles the G35, but with the front end of a camry?:donno:
Hyundai cars are getting better and nicer looking, but it would be hard for me to consider one....even at their prices, but the prices for Hyundais are slowing going up.

I have gotten in2 many arguments w/ the Hyundai-Defense-League over the year: yes, Hyundai has come a long way in the past 20 years. They apparently make decent reliable cars nowadays even tho they do look like other cars.
Unfortunately for Hyundai, many still remember the pieces of crap they used to make in the 80s. This generation is probably gonna have to die before Hyundai can really shed that image. I know many people 2day that still laugh at Hyundai despite how good they currently are.
I would not drive a Hyundai only bc it is trading down; I would have to switch to another luxury brand. It does seem, however, that they are making Kia their average brand & slowing moving Hyundai upmarket w/ 8 cylinder rear wheel drive autos.
1 thing that I think Honda/Acura can learn from them is the warranty. As good as their cars are, I think that Honda should have 4 year bumper-to-bumper warranties while Acuras have 5. This would definitely help sales & should not cost them much as long as they build reliable automobiles.

I agree that the Honda/Acura warranty should be longer.
Hyundai could pull a Lexus/Acura brand creation and create an upscale brand. But they could not stumble when doing so and would have to be perfect in offering luxery, handling, reliability and warranty at the time of introduction.

this might shock you but we were probably one of the lucky ones. we owned a 1988 hyundai excel gls, bought new. It had over 200,000 miles, with the original clutch, transmission, engine and ran excellant until it was totalled by a red-light runner. besides our tsx we have a 05 hyundai elantra with 60,000 miles-no problems. we owned a 05 civic-got rid of it-alot of problems. we have nothing against honda-almost bought a civic si sedan but decided not to wait and bought the tsx.

Hyundai needs a longer warranty to get people to look at their cars (as you stated, they were known to be very unreliable).
I don't even consider warranties when buying cars (I always plan to mod the car anyway). I'd only look into it if I were buying an unreliable car. I knew my acura would be rock solid, and it has been.

My TSX had so many problems with build quality back when I bought it new back in '03. However, I still kept this car cuz I enjoyed it. Most of the issues have been fixed, but sometimes it comes back.
I am surprised an Excel can go for that long, I remember hearing these cars were very unreliable...and yes Hyundai has come a long way since 1986. I might consider their cars in the future. I drove a 2006 Sonata rental and I was quite impressed.
