Here is a link from the internet on how i-VTEC works for a smaller engine found on the RSX.

http://asia.vtec.net/article/k20a/

It works the same way for the larger 2.4L TSX engine. i-VTEC engages automatically at around 6,000 rpm and it feels like a (very) small turbo kicking in for a 5AT. You feel a bigger “kick” with the 06/07 TSX compared to 04/05 TSXs because the newer models produce more hp because of engine improvements. Unfortunately; it only last for 1,000 to 1,200 rpms before you hit redline. Another downside is you only get to feel it in 1st and 2nd gear on a 5AT, about the time you are near i-Vtec in 3rd gear in the 5AT you are going +100mph.

The next link you should check out is Hondata reflash of the ECU to lower the i-VTEC to about 4850 rpms:

http://www.hondata.com/wizard/wiz_tsx.html

If you have any more questions, search the threads or the internet using “VTEC”, “iVTEC”, “Hondata”, “reflash”, “ECU reflash”

but the gears change at around 4000 rpm, will i have to do it in tiptronic mode to reach 6000rpm?

vtech should kick in around 4000 anyway ;)
normal driving doesnt require more than that, and ... yea
too bad hondata flash doesnt make it that low =D

i got the best poss metaphore for i-vtec. you now how ur abt to do something stupid, and right at the last moment u get this feeling like i shouldnt be doin this....well vtec is like that except instead of sayin dont do it, its screamin "GO MUTHA F**C*3R GO!!!!!".

Thats just me though in actuality it is just like Mr. gold put it. its like a small turbo w/ no blow off to show off

Hah, that's a pretty good analogy. In other cars you'd think you're about to blow the motor but instead of a blowout the TSX just comes to life and roars between 6-7K RPM.

And like Zeeshan said, floor it. The harder you're on the gas, the more pronounced the switchover is.

Does anyone know why did Acura make the i-Vtec kick-in at 6,000rpms instead of 4500rpms?

My guess is fuel economy, but I don't know for sure.

Yea, they purposly put it at a higher rev because imagine if you were to change lanes during traffic, you rev to 4000 and bam your Vtec kicks in, it might be a sticky situation before you realize it.

Vtec switches the cam lobes over at 6100RPM.
