View Full Version : Stock Navi vs. aftermarket unit
I am a total noob to car audio. Is it better to convert my non-navi to navi or get an aftermarket navi/DVD unit? I just want Navi and DVD in my car right now, or possibly hook up to a laptop if necessary. Thanks! And any recommendations of the aftermarket units?

I like how the stock Navi fit into our car.

whatever you do, do not "convert my non-navi to navi" !
just put in an aftermarket and be done with it & enjoy.

theres pros and cons, the acura navi is very nice, nice features, and of course custom fits our cars perfectly. most people however, dont convert, they just buy the car with navi. if they get a non nav, then they put an aftermarket, which seems to work well. aftermarket systems these days have some VERY attractive features. one, right off the bat, is that they play dvd's, which ours dont do without some extra expense.
i would say if your car is a non nav, and your going to spend the money anyway, get the aftermarket. pioneers avic z1 offers great features, like you can add bluetooth to it, it has xm nav traffic, which tsx's dont come with, and has an internal 30 gig hard drive to store music, rather than hooking an ipod (which you can also do if you please). plus also plays mp3 cd's and you got dvd movies. really a nice way to go. only problem is, your going to need quite a bit of expensive labor work, no matter which way you go to custom mold the system into the TSX.

Another way to go, and you can keep the factory system.

lol, lets not start this debate again. it'll go on for 1,000,000 pages.

Well, I always wanted an aftermarket system. But recently considered the Stock Navi conversion is the fact that it fits in nicely and the screen is at eye-level. Thus, when I am using the Navi or watching DVDs, I can just look to the side instead of looking downwards. Is the avic Z1 just a touch screen monitor? That's another debate as well. I don't know, but I think i prefer the flip out screen as it sits higher than just a monitor.

Tell me where you live and park your car outside. I will probably get the MT transmission within 2 days.
