LuLu is 9 years old.
the most common problem with the Maltese is eye tearing which is genetic. The tear ducts do not fully develop. The tearing many times will leave a brown stain under the eyes. Some dogs have the problem worse then others.
also most of the small dogs have lower back/hip problem.
other than those , Maltese is a very social and loyal dog.

wow...9 yrs old! is there something that can help lessen the tearing...how bad can it get? i want to make sure my aunt knows all the problems before she gets one. do they bark a lot, how about chewing? my yorkie is crazy...he does all the things that i don't want him to do... :thumbsdow

WanTing

for the tearing problem, there are solutions available at most pet stores to help combat this problem. Trimming the hair around the dogs eyes will also serve to combat the staining.

also here're some facts your aunt may wants to know.

If you want a dog who...

Is one of the smallest of all breeds
Is one of the brightest and most playful of the toy breeds
Is polite with people and other animals
Has a long coat that doesn't shed (often a good choice for allergy sufferers)
A Maltese may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

The fragility of toy breeds -- they are just too easy to injure when not under your complete control.
"Separation anxiety" (destructiveness and barking) when left alone too much
Suspiciousness or fearfulness when not socialized enough
Notorious housebreaking difficulties
Barking
Frequent brushing and combing
A Maltese may not be right for you.

but also for the housebreaking/barking problems , those can be fixed by everyday training.
