Funny how the list of "major" and "semi-major" parties changes over the years.
I mean, of course we still have the asses and elephants, but when I was a kid, it was like this:
Democratic Party
Republican Party
Liberal Party
Conservative Party
And that was it, unless you really wanted to scare people, in which case you added:
Socialist Worker Party
Around here, the Liberal Party usually supported the Democratic nominee and the Conservative Party supported the Republican.
Unless they were totally screwed up that year and shot themselves in the foot, which actually happened quite often, come to think of it.
One year everything got really screwy, and the incumbent NY City mayor, John Lindsay, who was a Republican, lost the Republican primary -- so the LIBERAL party nominated him -- and he won re-election as a "Liberal."
Aren't you glad you asked? :D

... and here's more!
The Communist Party (http://www.cpusa.org) still appears to be active.
The Federailst Party (http://www.bartleby.com/65/fe/FedistP.html), alas, is not. Neither is the Whig Party, though this site (http://bhorlor.4mg.com/whigdom.html) is entertaining.

.....the Whig Party.....
I always thought it was funny that the name of the party was "Whig" and that all the guys seemed to have stupid wigs. And then I think I read or heard somewhere that that's where the name came from -- that it was called the Whig Party because of the wigs that the guys wore. Well, I just checked it out, and it seems it's not true:
The American Whig Party (roughly from 1834-1856)
The Whig Party, in the United States, was for most of its history concerned with promoting internal improvements, such as roads, canals, railroads, deepening of rivers, etc. This was of interest to many Westerners in this period, isolated as they were and in need of markets. Abraham Lincoln was a Whig for most of this period.
The name came into use in the 1680s in England when there was the threat of establishment of a line of Catholic Kings, starting with James II. The Protestant element, who held that Parliament could prevent such a succession, came to be called Whigs after a radical Presbyterian group in Scotland, the Whigamores, while the party tending to the doctrine of the rights of King James II (and naturally containing Catholic as well as simply royalist elements), were called Tories after some bands of Irish Catholics who had been driven to become outlaws due to the crusade of the English against the church they clung to.....
Why DID guys wear those stupid wigs? (Some of the guys in Britain's Parliament still do.)
Did they keep them on for swimming? Not to mention for other things.
And if they didn't, why didn't they just leave them off afterwards too? :donno:

Why do judges wear wigs in court?
The thinking runs that wigs give the judge an air of impartiality and authority.
According to a spokesman for the upper-crust London wig makers, Thresher & Glenny, when a judge's hair cannot be seen, an element of his individuality is taken away, making him appear to be a more anonymous, impartial dispenser of justice.
Wigs have also been a symbol of status and power ever since they first became popular in seventeenth century France, where they were too expensive to be owned by anyone but the highest rank of professionals and the aristocracy.
"An air of impartiality and authority" -- BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Why not tattoos and nose rings? I'd take them more seriously then.

Since obviously this site is representative of the American people and we already have a large enough sampling on this thread to have meaningful figures, we can now say that the American people divide up as follows:
Republicans 40%
Libertarians 30%
Democrats 20%
Others 10%
Only 40%......looks to me like the Republicans are in big trouble. :D

Libertarian. "Absolute freedom for absolutely everyone!"
There is a Libertarian wing in the Republican Party. eg. Dr. Ron Paul, (R-TX) http://www.house.gov/paul/index.shtml also ran for President as a Libertarian in 1988.
By definition, there cannot be any libertarian thought within the Democrat Party.

.....By definition, there cannot be any libertarian thought within the Democrat Party.
With this administration being what it is (e.g. look up the definitions of "John Ashcroft," "civil liberties," and various other phrases that I know you can think of too), I feel sure that the Repubs are far further (good phrase) :D from libertarian than are the Dems.
Larchmont, who is a libertarian Democrat.
