can anyone give me feedback why we need to use premium gas in the TSX? I've tried all grades to see if it makes a difference in MPG and it doesn't. considering how much gas costs, I'm just going drop injector cleaner into the tank every now and then. why pay $4 - $5 more per tank for premium? I don't trust these gas stations...

I'm afraid to use anything but premium. The sales brochure states that using lower octane will result in diminished performance, but the owner's manual says that using anything else can cause damage to the engine. It's not worth the risk to me.

Pay $4-5 more each week is better than losing the performance of your car. I think it's wiser to use whatever things they recommend.
yep yep use recommended or be sorry later..

Your TSX is smart enough to determine what octane you are using. If you use less than premium it will deminish your performance. I have had 7 acuras and have always used premium even if 89 octane was recomended. Remember Acura has increased the compression ratio to 10.5:1 which is pretty high for a 4 banger. Your mileage may stay the same but you will may have some lag with a lower octane. :)

Lower octane results in retarded timing which results in reduced power. And in hot weather, even the retarded timing maps may not protect you from detonation.
Use premium.

200HP from a 4 banger is pretty high and using anything but premium will cost ya a lot more. And also let me note that using higher than recommended octane may not be good either because it burns slower and thus may give slightly less performance :)

that's fine, I was mostly wondering what exactly does lower octane gas do or not do that would harm the engine? if they recommend premium, there must be specific reasons. thanks.

Well if it's still in question...basically it ignites too early, which is detonation. It's harmful for the piston which is still being pushed up by the other engine parts. The computer can sense this and prevent it at the expense of performance. However, technology can't save the engine forever, recommend not to trust it :-D
