View Full Version : Experiencing Slow Site Access
Does anyone have this same problem as me? I've realized since the start of the year, the site takes alot longer to load. The threads are literally opening one line at a time, well these few weeks have really taken a toll on me and it only disbenefits the members more than anyone else.
I practically can't do any technical work on the forum and I'm leaving most threads unanswered because I'm either getting ½ page or ¾ page loads and constant refreshing doesn't help. Heck, at times I never have to use the reply button to load up from bottom up and that sorta speed things up a bit.
Pinging and trace routing the site has shown excessive delays unlike other forums even more higher traffic ones. So, who else has this same concern? Is it time for the administrators to look at changing or improving bandwidth limits with the new increased traffic and members on board?

Could be connection related.
My home connection is pretty much OK - no slow downs.
But my work connection sporadically gives hiccups when loading here - but I also set it to 40 a page.

I haven't had much problems, though my office it sometimes loads 1/2 to 3/4 a page sometimes and I would have to refresh....but I think it was my connection, though I am not sure.:donno:

No problems here
works perfect for me.. But i will ask the host.
I think we need to limit the size of avatars they take a lot of loading time.
I haven't experienced any slowdowns when accessing this site.

we must not allow signitures with pictures that eats up bandwith. Our bill for bandwith doubled this month.
Site should load faster now.

 that'll solve half of the NWS sigs issue also :D
Sometimes, sig pics can get in the way of browsing...almost to the point of annoying...almost... especially with sig pics that are huge...

Maybe limit avatars to 170x170 pixels also... 170 so it doesn't expand the user info section into the text section...

I removed avatars and signitures can you tell me if the speed is the same ? If it is faster we can keep it this way if not we can put it back up.
Its loading in seconds for me..

No difference in page loading speed for me, with them removed.

I didn't have any problem before.
BTW, FWIW......I check Alexa sometimes, and not just since the first of the year but going back a few more months, I noticed Alexa started saying this site is "very slow" (and it gives percentile figures). Prior to that, the site was called average or slightly better than average on speed. I did notice that around that time -- dunno, maybe July or something like that -- the site became less fast than before, but still quite fast. And there hasn't been any change from that in recent weeks.

I thought you were just going to remove the pics in the sigs... DOH!
It loads a bit faster, but not noticeable to the untrained eye(s) :D

YEs and YES - some of the avatars are so big it's ridiculous.
"signitures with pictures" belongs on game forums. Very distracting.
Suggestion:
I been holding this back:
the default smilies next to the TEXTAREA I'm typing into....i dont know if its just me but most of them are just totally irrelevent to normal usage
I mean smilies like these:
oooo4 <--- waste space :greenboun yyyyy11 thread: topic sadwavey buttkick squint slant
total waste of bandwith, IMO
How about changing them to the "normal" ones like :
iagree <--- dont have that

OH NO...our beautiful semi-NWS Avatars are gone! NO...the HUMANITY...I don't see a smiley for a burning Zeppelin. :grinno:
Just kidding...I never had a problem accessing the site with the avatars. I do agree that we should limit the size of the avatars to something a bit smaller. I dunno...I kind of like the smilies...with the exceptions of the "larger" screen gobbling ones...like the smilies that go around in circles hand in hand. Hypnotizing...yes...but necessary? Maybe not. Just my 2 cents.

:sprint: limit the size of avatars to 200x200 pixels and 30kb file size. 1000x1000 is a bit excessive of a size for an avatar. I already miss my avatar.:(

actually...170 would make the posts flow smoother... that way you won't see the user's area extend into the post area... 200 would flow in about 20 pixels...

I have no speed issues either.
The only time I had speed issues was the change in the first 2 posts on the page with the ads. It seems to take a little while for those to load initially

I agree with RTG about the smilies.
Most of them rarely if ever get used.
Although there are a couple that I like to use BECAUSE no one else does.
Like :ikno:
But a lot of them really aren't needed; plus a number of them are identical/redundant.
And there are a few we don't have that we really could use.
My nominees:
madfawk, grinfawk
Larchmont, who never in his life thought he'd have those words in his active vocabulary. :D
Also it would help a lot if the smilie "codes" could be made more intuitive.
Anybody figured out why "sprint" is the code for :sprint: (that one isn't really a problem, since nobody seems to have trouble using it) or why 007 is the code for :007:?
On topic: Never had problem of the site being slow.

never had a problem with speed
Looks like I've opened a big can of worms here. Well back to business as usual but definitely limited avatar and signature size would help reduce bandwidth usage. But limits should be agreed upon by the majority of the members.

true
love to get the avatar back and I have no problemo of limiting the size.
Noel so your speed is back to normal?
I had a huge bill for last months bandwith come in, I kept wondering why host has set up something to reset the logs that picked up our server speed aswell.
Avatars and signitures will be returned back to normal end of this weekend I want to see if it takes a huge load on server speed.

No problems: 15
Problems: 2
But aside from the vote, and putting everything back up as normal.....
I'm just curious: WAS THERE a problem??? (There wasn't anything that most people could observe.)
Did anything different really start happening around the first of the year? If so, is it known what caused it?
Don't necessarily need answers, of course; just curious, as always. :D

experiencing some slowness when posting, also when going between the smaller pages. Is there any way we could select how many posts we can see on a page?
larchmont
02-09-2005, 11:53 PM
There sure is.
Go to the top of the page, left side, and click User CP.
Then pick Edit Options, and go down to where there's the "Thread Display Options."
You'll see an area that says.....
Number of Posts to Show Per Page
Use this option to set the number of posts to show in a thread before splitting the display into multiple pages.
Number of Posts to Show Per Page:
The default is 15. You can pick a smaller number.
