I have a 2005, auto TSX, since march and I've been getting a wierd grinding noise right before the tranny goes into 2nd gear. It really only happens after I back out of a spot where i'v been park for a while, ie from the garage in the mornings or after being parked while at a store for a couple hours.
I'll start the car, i even wait a couple minuets before driveing, put it in reverse, back out, put it in drive, then give it gas to drive off. As the car is about to shift from 1st to 2nd, it'll make a grind noise, that i can even feel off the gas pedal.
I took it in the dealer, and i couldnt duplicate the problem. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this, or know what it is. The service guy said something about the ABS pressurizing. I dont think its that because it doesnt happen all the time. The mechamic there said he put it on the lift and saw nothing.
If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Thanks.

I think I have the same "problem" - it only lasts about a second, and only when I start up the car after it's been parked overnight. I tend to think the mechanic is right and that it is just the ABS system - I used to have something similar happen on my 3.2TL, though the sound was slightly different. However, when I brake and the ABS engages, I get a similar sound to the grinding that I hear when I start up.
I'm probably not going to worry about it, but I'll keep my ears open.

Isnt that the traction control activator? or whatever they call it, it happens when you drive for about 5 seconds.

I guess it could be that. it does happen like you said, after about 5 secs of driving. sometimes its louder, sometime doesnt happen at all. its damn wierd.
i'll try disabling the traction control before i start driving. see what that does???
Thanks.

The reason it only happens after the car has been parked is that it is still cold. Once you drive a little the trans heats up and the gear oil covers all the moving parts. My car does the same thing as what you are describing, and though it is not an issue now, I hope it does not become one in the future.

ah, the morning crunch.
The first time I heard it, I thought "wtf?", but it happens every morning and doesn't seem to affect anything, so I pay it no mind.

dang. i been driving our tsx for a week now and I hear that noise too. I was going to take it in, but since you guys say it's normal I'll just wait and see what happens. hope all is well and nothing to worry about.

I noticed this thread is regarding an auto tranny. I have 6 MT and I think I have the same noise. Doesn't always happen. But when it does, it usually happens within 5 seconds of driving off and would only last a second.

Hi Guys,
Posted on this when I got my TSX last year and everyone told me it was the ABS self test kicking in.

this is my 4th car with ABS. Ram, Mustang, Grand Cherokee, and TSX. All of them made the sound you are describing. I think it definetly has to do with the ABS. those other 3 cars i owned for years and never had problems with them. so the same noise on this car to me is normal.

Wow, this thread is a load off my mind! I've had my TSX a grand total of 5 days and it's made that same sound/shudder every morning! Always in the same way, backing out of the driveway, shift into drive, makes the sound, go to work paranoid there is something wrong with my car. Tormorrow I can enjoy the morning commute! Thanks guys!

Check your speedometers :). If it's exactly at 10 mph everytime, yeah, it's the ABS self check. More pronounced on my Accord than the girlfriend's TSX. A good noise...............

Is everyone talking about the same problem? The poster mentions "grind-like noise", someone else mentioned "morning crunch"... I get a very similar symptom but the noise is like a light scraping of a sort, and I don't notice it EVERY morning, just some mornings. When it does happen though, it's always when the car is cold-started.
