OK. So I've never had a car with "see-through" wheels before. Just what do I clean?

Things do get pretty dirty, but so far I've only soaped and rinsed the outer surface of the spokes(?) - and tried to avoid the visible brake mechanisms. The rear wheels look almost like they can be flossed clear through in some places.

Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks very much.

I use MEGUIARS Mirror Glaze Wheel Cleaner works great! all it takes is 3 steps hose the rims then spray it with the cleaner then hose again and its all gone. Brake dust ect.. you dont even need to scrub.

Hope this helps.

Does that include the inside of the rims also? Every 6 months or so I take tires off of the car and wash rims seperately from it (outside and inside).

I never wash the inside of my rims but when i sprayed it on it was actually coming off :D so it should work aswell

I got in the habit of doing that after seeing how nasty and grimy the rims on my gtp got after awhile. My wife even says that the rims on her SUV look so much better when clean.

My thanks to all of you for the advice.

The gtp was a torque monster, however it had a speed limiter on it (126 mph). No manual tranny. However it did have the heads up display. And with the sc, you could watch the gas gauge move if into the boost..

while we are on the subject does the tsx have a speed limiter?

I thought the tsx was drag limited to 133

Ray

I would advise against using wheel cleaners because a majority of them have chemicals that can strip off the finish of the wheels and/or brake calipers, etc. -

Use good 'ol soap and water and a long-handled brush, and ever few months or so, take the entire wheel off to clean the inside.

MEGUIARS Mirror Glaze Wheel Cleaner

I know 4 people who use it including myself for the past year without a problem..

Friend uses it on his 19s chromes that he paid $4,500 for..

I think this is the best wheel cleaner..

As far as sope and water it is good and all but on cold days like these rather just spray something on and hose it off in few mins :D

Great point. I'm generalizing when I say wheel cleaners - I'm sure there are some out there on the market that are safe for clearcoated/finished wheels.

I just finished my sponsorship for the year w/ Meguiars - if they pick me up this year I will definitely be on the lookout for that cleaner!! :)

this thread came up just in time. i just took a closer look at my wheels and brakes after the winter...one thing i noticed is how dirty the area where the rim connects with the brakes...(basically at the center point area of the wheel). is it safe to go around with a metal brush or nylon brush to beat that nasty stuff off? or any cleaner out there?

thanks

Soap and Water with a brush for me. I also remove the wheel twice a year to get the insides clean

do you guys ever clean your brakes?

I find the wheels ez to clean. The gaps between the spokes are big enough to admit my hand, so I can get the corners easily.

After cleaning the wheels, I zainoed them also.. All I have to do is get a damp towel or something disposable and wipe it clean. (though after I brought my car home they were like that..but without zaino)

As far as cleaning brakes go, I've never done it..

Nope, I never touch them.

Well since the stock wheels on the TSX are actually clear coated, you probably want to treat them just like you would the rest of the finish on your car. In fact, polishing and waxing(using products without cleaning abrasives) makes them *very* easy to wipe down when it comes time to do so.

I would advise against using wheel cleaners because a majority of them have chemicals that can strip off the finish of the wheels and/or brake calipers, etc.

The concentrate is generally mixed with an acid based solution, thus making it easy to remove the brake dust. Yes, it's not ideal to use unless absolutely necessary.

Meguiars hot wheels cleaner (spray on-wash off application) is not acid based, thus it's safe for chrome, polished or painted rims.

I use Meguars's All Wheel Cleaner. When I spray it on it the rims, it also gets onto the brake disc. Afterwards, the disc looks like a brownish red color like rust. This color comes off after driving (and using the brakes). To those who use wheel spray cleaner, is this color change normal? To me it seems wrong.

lokman

That is normal. The brake discs oxidize normally with just water or even from sitting in a humid environment. It shouldn't be anything you need to worry about.

Thanks. One additional question. How often do people use the spray on wheel cleaner? Every week?

VorteC

Well.. that's like asking how often do people wash their cars, can vary vastly. Personally I spray them each time after a full wash/wax/interior detail. Makes me feel good to know the whole car looks cleaned, even the tires lol.
