No. I think that's a good choice. Racingzone is thriving and it is closed to Guests..I think??? Well anyway good choice.

Had the same problem with my site.....Everyone would come take a look leave and never come back. After like 3months of 1300 hits....I had 7members!!! 2 of which were asst. managers, and me the manager.!!!!

Just discovered this old thread.

I'm glad you DIDN'T close it, even though it seemed like everybody was agreeing that it was a good idea.

I never would have gotten hooked on these forums if not that I could first visit for a while as a guest. Part of it was that I was totally new to the net and didn't feel that comfortable with it, and part of it was that I didn't feel "entitled" to be a member until I had the car. That second reason especially was silly, but lots of people might have their own reasons., whatever they may be.

And anyway, what's wrong with someone just visiting and not becoming a member??? I don't get what the problem is. It's not like you're losing out on dues, because there aren't any, and it's not like if someone becomes a member they're automatically going to start posting and coming here more often than if they were just a guest, or even that it's likely.

You might think they would, and of course I have every reason to think that you know better than I do. But, on another site which went through this (sorry to make another such reference, but it's relevant), it didn't seem to work that way. There were periods during which they didn't allow browsing unless you joined, and you know what happened? They got dozens of people joining every day, but THE GREAT, GREAT MAJORITY of them never posted -- zero posts. You could look it up, the data are there. It's still probably true that most of the people who join don't do any posts, but during the periods when you had to register in order to browse, it was a HUGE majority, like almost everybody. I don't see how it benefits a site to get more people to join if they don't participate, and (probably) never even came back.

My 1.5 cents: Unless there's a compelling reason to close something, keep it open.

I would add that in the current situation there may well be a lot of people from certain venues who would be hesitant about joining, at least right now, but who are very interested in browsing for info -- and, in due course, they may feel comfortable joining. I think this may partly account for the very large number of "guests" we've been having lately.

I think it's great that y'all have kept it open, and I think it would be good to keep it open.

:sprint: Here's another vote to keep it open.

Closing the site may instantly bring in new members in the short term but leaving the site open will be better in the long run. It sparks more interest to those who doesn't want to register, which leads to more potential members in the future.

Although I myself usually don't register to forums unless it's closed, I like to get a feel for a site before registering and contributing to the forums.

Thanks, dudes. Of course I couldn't agree more.

BTW there are a couple of sites I could mention where they would have closed a thread like this before anybody except me had a chance to say anything. :D

The site will stay open to guests. :D
