Hi guys,
Im kind of new to this thing but I've got a problem.I just bought a 1991 ford Explorer. When I bought the car the person that sold it to me told me that the only thing wrong with it was the radiator. So I called around and found a new radiator for $129.00. I thought about it for a while and finally bought the car. A couple days later my friends neighbor/friend/mechanic came over to look at the car. He examined it for a while and then gave me the bad news....I have a blown head gasket! My question to you guys is what do I do? Do I buy the parts and a manuel and try to fix it myself,or do i try to raise $800.00 to get it fixed by a mechanic???

Please help!

you could whore yourself out to 10 fat chicks at 80$ a piece... or to 8 really fat chicks for 100$

Lol...sorry for the family guy quote... you could ask your parents or something I guess, your only 15 so Figure they'd be willing to help you out...ask for a payment plan or something...

:spit: So funny.

Def save up the scratch and pay to have the job done. Replacing a head gasket is no novice job. That does suck having to invest almost a G in a used vehicle that could not have been much more than 2 or 3. Future advice, always have potential used cars looked over by a mechanic before purchasing. If it cost you $50 or $75 up front, it can save you hundreds or even thousands in the future. good luck pal.

head gaskets blow......literally and figuratively. Just pay to have it done. And send the guy a nice note thanking him for selling you junk.

Dude you brought a Ford Explorer.. its gonna cost u close to 100$ just to fill that tank up... you better get some money together no matter what, if you cant afford 800$ to fix the car..then you cant afford to drive it right now either...

Also no offense but if you buy a Used Car for Less then 1,000..its gonna have a whole lot more wrong with it then just a Radiator... Its hard to find a Parts car for under 1k...

so my advice to you is start working now, do odd jobs whatever, save up 800$...and once u save up the 800$'s...then you can drive this car around...until then I guess ur just stuck...sorry bud

oh and us mod's...we know everything... lol you have your birthdate in your profile

a 1991 ford explorer thread found in a "tsx problems and fixes" category.

i read this thread throughout, twice, to see where it related to a tsx...haha

Seriously, I'd trade the thing in and get something more "practical".

If you're trading it for anything, I'd trade it for something with minimal maintenance required. Sounds like you don't exactly have the money for large repair jobs.

Your 15, and as hard as this may sound...I know it sucks and I hate to ask the question but...

Do you really need a Car Right now?... especially a Ford Explorer when gas prices are this F**king high, (and may go right back up again real soon, some places are even dry round here)... I know its a hard Idea to accept, but If you cant afford to fix it, you probibly cant really afford to drive it... The Responsible thing to do would be to sell it again, Get a Job... its not hard to do..just swallow your pride and work at McDonalds if you have to, Money is Money...Hell I even did roofing for a summer... save up for a year or two...and Then buy something Cooler, that actually runs well...and this time have a mechanic look at it BEFORE you buy it... 15 is pretty young to have a car anyway to tell the truth, no offense but your probably not really responsible enough and experienced enough...To tell the Truth I wasn't when I got my Car at 17... This is the responsible thing to do, and where as Short-Term It may suck majorly...Long Term you'll have a better car, be more ready and appreciative for it and Wont get F**ked over again

Just my two cents, and to tell the truth ive never been the Responsible One...So I definitely cant blame you if you decide not to go this route...however either way...good luck

buy an old civic!!!!

which engine is in the Explorer??? if its the 3.8 no crap it blew the head gasket. they all go. for whatever odd reason everything that touches antifreeze with those motors go... ALSO.. the transfer cases and front axels give a lot o problems in those trucks.. I hope your saving for a TSX though!!!

And Memphis.. What did you say??? :tard: (I was lost)

To add on to what MemphisRheins said, I didn't buy a car until I was 24. And I bought an Acura TSX.

And for it, I saved up for over 18 months. And I appreciate the car a lot more for it.

I didn't have a car through out my teenage years, and I had to take the bus for my entire university career.

Yes, it sucked a lot, but if you have good friends, they can give you rides.

Now, I have a nice car, nicer than most of the cars my friends drive (well, can't compete with people who have parents to pay for their cars. :p ). Plus, since I saved up a lot, I don't have car payments either.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, yes, a car is very convenient and "cool". But being forced to put in large percentages of your income/savings just to maintain that convenience and cool factor might not be worth it. Consider your options and maybe you'll realize a car isn't really that necessary.

Yah. I've ben applying for jobs EVERYWHERE and no one has called back yet. Most people around here dont want to hire 15yr olds but I keep trying. And no it is not a 3.8 it is a 4.0. My parts are coming in and my friends are gonna fix it for me. If i get it fixed I can sell it for 1500 to some guy I know and save up for another then get the Honda(I've always wanted a Honda especially a Civic). Right now I tring to focus on school and getting good grades.

What kind of jobs are you applying for?

I know it might sound a little geeky, but working at the school is a good way to get some good experience for other jobs.

Plus, since they're most likely unionized, they can't work you to death like other dirt-cheap minimum wage jobs. :)
