Seems like there are a lot of 5AT, Non-Navi's... so figured id make a thread and see just who drives what.

Navi- Navigation
MT- Manual Transmission
AT- Automatic Transmission

Lanny, speaking from personal opinion, Navi is not as popular for people that like shifting gears because most of us are dinasaurs and want the old school driving experience. Navi seems more for automatics and mini vans but you are still my TSX hero and I give you kudos for being unique. A small part of the reason I liked Red/Ebony 6MT, besides it looking good, is because there are so few of them on the road. Likewise, there are few 6MT with Navi.

Go Lanny, charting new territory! :bowdown1:

Thanks IB, that theory makes a lot of sense. I'm a little surprised that there aren't more 6MTs on the board; I know that overall the 5AT outsells it by a significant margin, but I though it would be a little closer here.

I wonder how many people would be interested in a sequential manual gearbox if Honda offered one; especially if it cost a couple of grand. I personally love them, but applying your theory, maybe a lot of purists would stick with the manual, and a lot of 5ATers may not think it's worth the money........

Lanny, I don't really like the sequential gearbox. I like the having all four of my limbs involved in driving the car. Right foot for gas, left for clutch, left hand for steering and right hand for shifting. I also like modulating the clutch when downshifting. I found it hard to do with sequential. Also, it just feels a bit disconneted when compared to the old school manual. If that is all I could get though, that might be my only choice. It seems like less and less manuals are being made. Even the new Lexus IS350 will not be offered in manual for the 6 cylinder version. I have been watching a lot of car commercials lately and it is interesting because whenever they show a performance car, they always show a guys shifting gears. And when they post acceleration numbers they usually post manual numbers but when you go buy a car, there are no manuals on the lot. I recently saw a cool 350 Z ad with a guy shifting through city streets but when you go to the Nissan dealership, they don't have a single manual....go figure.

MemphisRheins

I think the perfect Tranny in my book would be a SMG with a optional Clutch, like theres a switch where the Computer will take over Clutching, and you depress the clutch petal fully to the ground where it locks... So That way you can could drive a fully manual car when you want to, and not have to deal with it when you dont... just a thought, probably impossible anyway.

Only Type of SMG id like is Paddle Shifters, besides that though, I much rather prefer an Old School Manual Transmission

I think as time goes by, there will be a lot more development on the SMG/DSG type gearbox, as it will be the best of almost all worlds; lighter and more efficient than a torque converter based automatic, better performance than a manual, while still offering the convenience of an auto. The only drawback, as you and MR pointed out, is giving up the interaction between car and driver.

But look at the new IS350; this is marketed as a high performance driver's car, and yet they've taken away almost all ability to interface with the car; dozens of computer-controlled driving aids, and you can't even turn them off......

Something about shifting in 5/100 of a second just really whets my appetite; especially at around 8K rpm :D............

That's what I think too.

And I'd bet there's also a correlation between having the 6MT and some other things too -- like, not using the cruise control.

I myself don't like it, even though I have the 5AT. I'm a dinosaur too but a different kind. :tard:

You're really different Larch; you have the 6AT? :D

I know where you guys are coming from; cruise control, cup holders, automatic transmissions, all things that take away or distract from the driving experience. But it's hard to be a purist nowadays with all the technology that has crept into cars.

For my part, I don't ever use cruise, I don't eat or drink in my car, don't use the cell phone.

But I'm not opposed to having technology that makes me faster or safer. I find that on roads that I'm unfamiliar with, the Nav option allows me to see the road; kind of pre run it if you will........

I looked into removing the cupholders, but the Euro's have them too, so theres not like a neat replacement piece,

Only use Cruise on long drives as well

Yeah, funny you mention it but I don't use cruise control either. I feel like I'm not in control.. Good point Larchmont. And I NEVER chat on the cell phone. I have picked it up a few times because I have kids in daycare and baby sitter and If it's an emergency I need to know but I pull over and don't chat. My chat is not worth risking someone else's life. Part of the problem with Navi, cup holders, blue tooth, DVD players is that all those things are detracting people's attention while driving. I really think if more drove manuals they would be better drivers. There are a lot of good drivers with ATs, it's just that the cars are so cozy and full of gadgets now that safety has gone down.

It might have been some kind of Freudian slip, maybe wishful thinking, but......as long as we're talking about it, I swear that sometimes it feels like there's a 6th gear.
It's already in 5th, and then if you kick it up, it seems like you cross a barrier, the revs drop, and you're off.

That's not why I said "6," I was just being retarded.
But now that we mention it........

That's the torque converter locking up. It would drop the revs, almost like shifting to a higher gear. See, it is a 6AT :D.............

I'm 6MT w/Navi. Person #5 for the 6MT w/navi.

Can I ask why there aren't as many people with 6MT as the 5AT? Also, have the 5AT people driven the 6MT before buying the 5AT?

MemphisRheins
10-13-2005, 08:38 PM
I love driving a stick, I would of brought the 6MT if I could, however at the time I had to get a 5AT, Split the cost of the car with my parents, and they said no to having a stick in my first car... so unfortunately the decision was ultimately theirs

Add another to the 6MT w/navi camp. I agree with those who believe that a MT makes you a more aware driver. I definitely feel more in tune with the road and what's going on around me. It makes you think more while your driving....that's a fact! Not to mention, it's a blast to drive! Especially with a gearbox as sweet as the TSX has.

......Can I ask why there aren't as many people with 6MT as the 5AT? Also, have the 5AT people driven the 6MT before buying the 5AT?
(a) A lot of people CAN'T drive a stick (i.e. never learned, or it's been so long since they did that they feel they can't), or.....

(b) They have someone else in the family (or whatever) who drives the car who doesn't drive a stick, or.....

(c) Lots of stop-and-go traffic makes it a PITA, or.....

(d) They're just lazy. :D

P.S. That's impressive how many times you said "6MT" and "5AT" without screwing it up like I did.

AHA!!!!!! :D :D :D

Thank you, Lanny!!!

Let's see, what does that mean anyway.......

".....Modern torque converters can multiply the torque of the engine by two to three times. This effect only happens when the engine is turning much faster than the transmission. At higher speeds, the transmission catches up to the engine, eventually moving at almost the same speed. Ideally, though, the transmission would move at exactly the same speed as the engine, because this difference in speed wastes power. This is part of the reason why cars with automatic transmissions get worse gas mileage than cars with manual transmissions. To counter this effect, some cars have a torque converter with a lockup clutch. When the two halves of the torque converter get up to speed, this clutch locks them together, eliminating the slippage and improving efficiency."

(from Howstuffworks)

P.S. Is that sort of what it's about??? :tard:

I drive a 5AT with Navi...Reason being:
- I talk on the phone a lot
- I would eat in the car (but I dont' allow anyone else to eat in there)
- Too much traffic here
I haven't driven a TSX MT, but I would expect it to feel like it's quicker...

Dealers should be able to do a search and trade for the car u want...most would rather sell u whats on there lot...but see if u can get one swapped from another dealership...all depends on if they want to work with u or not...and if they dont find another acura dealer who will...key thing is call on the phone and tell them ur not paying anything more than 500 above invoice...and tell them if they get u the car u want ull take it...thats what i did with my MT 05 and got it at the dealer i wanted to get it from and the price i wanted to get it for... and i called every acura dealer in nj and brought all my quotes with me to the one i wanted to deal with and said heres the bottom line from the last one...give me this deal or im going here and get me this car...next day i was in my tsx...Try it....just be firm and dont back down!!

2005 6MT, Non-Nav...I wanted the 6 speed more that the NAV option.

I can understand why there are more 5AT than there are 6MT. Less that 10% of the cars sold in North America are manual transmission.

So...

5AT, non-NAV would be pretty common.

5AT, NAV is...I don't know...special? Ha ha ha.

6MT, non-NAV is rare.

Just doin' a little AT vs MT math: on our almost statistically acceptable standard of 197 votes thus far, the transmission choice is run 60%/40%. Not such a dour a situation for us 6MT people as I would have thought.
