360.
im thinking your responses are all gonna be about preference, but heres mine:
i cant actually play with the ps3 controller. im a lefty. most games are harder to play with the ps3's joysticks for me. aside from that, my 360 streams my music and media center to my living room well (your son may not use it but it still works well). The 360 has a bunch of cool exclusive game content also. LIVE is amazing: i had a ps3 and was always pissed that i could never find matches for games.
After having owned all three at launch, i kept my 360 and its been great so far.

360 just because the game title choice is much larger than the PS3. Esp for a 8 year old kid. Also if you have netflix you can stream movies to you xbox and if you have a Windows 7, Vista, or XP Media Center you can link you Xbox to your PC and stream all you personal music, pics, videos and TV (if you have a TV tuner card) straight to the TV the 360 is connected too.

I'd say PS3 mainly because online gaming is free and you get a BD player. There are quite a few good games on ps3, but there is no doubt that there are more games on 360. I've got a ps3 and couldn't be happier..nearly all of my friends also have a ps3 so online gaming is great.

Yea, it's really up to preference here and use of the system. I've played all of them countless times from my own systems to friend's/family's. I own the Wii and PS3 though, while a few friends and family members have the 360.
Online gaming: Good on both, ppl swear it's 100x better for the 360 but in my experience they're nearly the same but the 360 seems to be a bit more seamless and not as many lags. PS3 is free and Live for 360 has a slight fee to pay for monthly, or annually, or lifetime subscriptions depending on your choice. I play online a lot with my PS3 and never had an issue except for when MW2 came out it was down for a day for some reason. Overall I love it for the PS3 but it's really up to the supporters/haters opinion of the other console. Either console does a great job at online gaming for my tastes. There are those out there who love to knit-pick on the most useless of issues and I'm sure you can find their opinions in places. For the average gamer, esp an 8yr old, I think they won't be able to tell any difference. Do you even plan to allow him to play online? Some ppl like to hold off for online gaming until the kids are older but jw.
The title choices: More for the 360 but the majority of big games are dual/tri-console. There isn't really a title that I want for PS3 that is only available on XBOX. It would be nice to have Halo but I'm not a die hard fan of the game like others. Gears of War would also be nice to have but, again, nothing I'm dying over. If your son likes more of the lighter side of games like Mario then you may want to keep looking into the Wii and maybe you just have a defective console. 360 and PS3 have a decent selection for kid games but def not as much as the Wii. I wish Mario Kart was for the PS3/360 though just bc I think that is one of the funnest games I've ever played haha.
Controller design: Personally I hate the way the 360 control is so big. I like the more natural feel/control of the PS3 controller, always have. As for the difference btwn lefty/righty I'm not really sure how the XBOX is more friendly on that fact since the layout is almost the same. You can also switch the controller style to southpaw for those who are lefty. But the general layout is the same as the PS3 but it's just a bulkier control.
Size/design: The new slim PS3 is awesome. I hated the way the PS3 was so big when it first came out but now I have the new slim one and love it. The 360, imo, isn't an attractive console but that doesn't really matter if you don't care about looks. It's a bit larger so if you have an entertainment center you may want to consider where you will put it if you're tight on space. If not then it doesn't really matter.
System: You have media options in the PS3 as well as the 360. I do like how you have that new streaming option with the 360 and the computer which is pretty sweet. I don't really use the media or anything regarding playing music on my system bc I don't need it. I have used the Blu-Ray player which is awesome. I absolutely love that being an option in the PS3. Both systems are quick but the load time is a tad bit longer on the PS3, but again, nothing super annoying or serious imo.
In the end it's really up to you on which you like. You can't really go wrong with either system imo, but I'm more partial to the PS3 over the 360. If you're up against the wall about it then ask your son which he would prefer. Maybe he has more friends who have one console than the other that he'd enjoy being able to play with his friends on so that could help you decide as well. There are other factors to consider as well which are much more involved which you may want to Google but these were a few key that I always consider when buying a new system. Either way you'll be having a great console that I doubt you'd be unhappy with.

I voted XBOX 360. I have one, and love the online gameplay. True, it does cost to play on line, but its flawless and fast. I have heard that PS3 is a little slower, but I haven't played it personally.
I have heard bad things about the new, less expensive PS3. It is not reverse-compatible with older PS games according to my friend! Just beware if you are planning on playing older games.

I own both and its a tough choice to buy games for each. I think for an 8 year old xbox would be more suitable because of more game choices specially for the young age group and he'd probably like halo lol. But the thing I don't like bout xbox is the ring of death, got it 3 times already. I'm not saying ps3 or xbox is better but I think he enjoy the xbox more specially with other friends his age. If you care bout blu ray, then you can kinda kill 2 birds with 1 stone by going with PS3

for sortudo:
the xbox joysticks are offset, the left being up higher than the right. Im not sure why, but it suits me much better than having them even height, especially for shooters. southpaw is one remedy, but it doesnt fix everything.
either way, good luck choosing OP
