Does anyone know the 2004-5 horsepower rating using the current system? I know that it was 200hp back then but then in 2006 they changed the rating system; unfortunately, that was also when Acura did the TSX MMC so the 205hp is not necessarily only a 5hp increase. I remember estimates at the time were the engine would now be ~180hp.

Just curious as I am car shopping and would like to have a reference as to what I am currently used to.

Thanks!

If we go by the 3rd generation TL as a baseline for measuring the delta for revised SAE measurement (specific to Acura), it went from 270bhp to 258bhp. Unlike the TSX, the 3rd gen TL (minus type S) did not get any engine tweaks. Therefore thats a (-12hp) revision.

Original 04-05 TSX was rated at 200hp, so in revised SAE measurements it should be 188hp. That technically means the revised components in the 06+ K24A2 engine netted a yield of +18hp.

I say manufacturer specific revision because some manufacturers, like Nissan, actually underrated their engines. Perfect example is the 03 Maxima, with 255bhp, versus the 04 Maxima, which was rated for 260hp after the revision. Same motor, no revision. FWD based VQ35DE.

Wow, 18-20 hp more over the 04/05?! I always thought it was in the range of 8-10 hp. Great info.

Larger throttle body, larger intake and exhaust valves and more aggressive camshaft.

Looks like I got a little work to do. Lol. I'm lookin to get more power. And doing OEM upgrades for that extra HP is nice. So an 06 IM and TB swap. Don't think I wanna open up the head on my DD. Not til I get another TSX tho. Its like when I had my '93 accord. You could take the intake manifold, ECU, and header off of 2 of the different motors that came in them and get the HP gains. Responded very well with supporting mods too.

Don't want TOO much tho. Lol. Don't want the daily drive to turn into drone.

If your looking to add hp check out tottenham's guide to NA power. Some good info there.

Actually the exhaust valves are the same size, only the intake is +1mm.

Heres a good list as to why it makes more power:

Increased intake flow:

Intake valve + 1 mm oversize
Intake cam High lift lobe with 0.9 mm more lift and 12 degrees more duration
Throttle body increased from 60-64mm
Radius on some intake pipes increased from 70-80mm

Increased exhaust flow

Exhaust Head pipe increased frm 60-65mm
Higher flow catalytic converter
Main (single) exhaust pipe increased from 54-57mm
Rear (twin) pipes increased in diameter from 42.5 to 45mm

Block improvements:

Additional air passages in crankcase for reduced pumping losses

Other:

Stronger conrods
New crankshaft with more counterbalance weight
Revised pistons with more valve-piston clearance

Cams:

The exhaust cam is bigger on the primaries and secondary lobes than any other Honda made K series cam. The intake has larger primary lobes than any other K series Honda cam and a type R secondary lobe. If you have to use Honda cams, use 06 TSX cams.

This is also the reason why I keep telling people not to run an ECU from an 04-05 on an 06-08 without it being tuned. There different enough to make a substantial gain in power.

So 06 is the cut off for better parts?

Like the 06 header on an 05 will yield more power?

Also, what about the IM and TB combo of an 06 on an 05? Would it need to be tuned if used?

Kindest Regards,

Kindest Regards,
1) Not by much

2) You would be better off with an RBC or RRC with a J35 or 37 TB. Yes it will need to be tuned.

Most of the power gains in the 06 come from a better flowing head and a more aggressive cam.

Thanks for the Info

Very useful info. If I buy an RLX hybrid with 370hp I am going to be doubling hp & maybe even tripling torque (with 30mpg). Crazy as I rarely feel my 2004 TSX is underpowered. They need to hurry up & show us this car (assuming that there are cosmetic differences) & its price.

From Edmunds.com "Later in the year, Acura will add the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD model, which will deliver a combined 370 hp from its gasoline and electric power sources. This RLX will use a seven-speed automated manual transmission, and Acura claims it will have EPA ratings of 30 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined."

7speed automated manual transmission? Is that paddle shifters?

Most likely not, it could be like the TLs but I doubt it. It will most likely be a push stick in the center console. But thats just a guess.

If you mean like a GTR or Lambo, it will be nothing like that.

Rumor

Just a rumor so no clue how true it may be but the RLX Hybrid is supposed to get the same setup as the NSX - which kinda makes sense since they have the same 3 motor system, just reversed - so it is supposed to have not only paddle shifters but also the button setup instead of gear shift with the 7 speed DCT:
