So although this might not sound like the greatest question, but I believe my AC has suffered the black death. I was wondering if I could just change the AC compressor and flush the system and refill it, and this would allow the AC to work once again? Or must everything be changed?

Well like 80% of the entire system is the compressor. Before jumping on the compressor however check, if maybe your A/C relay is working.

On my mom's car the relay went out and we thought the compressor had gone bad. Just as I was about to buy a new compressor I heard that you can take the relay out and bang it on something hard to get it 'unstuck'. Worked like a charm!

It's not the relay, and i'm almost 100% sure it's the compressor as I can't see the clutch anymore =\, so would it be okay just to replace the compressor? Don't want to have to do all the lines condensor etc as that gets quite pricey...

Depends. If the compressor didn't "shit" itself, it should be as simple as replacing the compressor and going on your way.

I read on here that you can verify if the compressor took a dump or not by removing the compressor and sticking a cotton swap into the line. If black residue appears (hence the name black death asdfg) you need to replace the entire system.

Good luck :(

Oh great.... I wonder what will happen if it did shit itself and there's black residue and I still decide to just flush and replace the compressor... lol I really hope it didn't do this though..

If the clutch is gone, it most likely broke away when the compressor locked up. Most likely did blow oil and junk into the system. You should remove the filter/drier, flush the system and lines, add the correct amount of PAG oil to each component, install new drier, install new compressor and evacuate/recharge the system.

Edit: there is a sight glass located on the frame of the car below the power steering reservoir. It should be clear (or have a greenish hue if UV dye has ever been added) but if its black, there's one sign that it has suffered a "black death"
