TOKYO — Honda marked a changing of the guard here on Tuesday with an official gathering to mark the coming of Takanobu Ito, Honda's new president and CEO. Ito, who officially became Honda chief on June 25, takes over a Honda Motor that has fared better than Toyota and Nissan in the global economic downturn so far.

Even so, with Ito now at the helm, Honda is looking for a new direction.

Honda needs to regroup and recapture the spirit of the past, said Ito, who is heading up both Honda and its engineering division, Honda R&D, so that quick decisions can be made and forced through to combat the current crisis.

Insiders say Ito has already moved swiftly to shake up Honda's future product line for the better, although the first fruits of this revolution will likely be two to three years away at the soonest.

Ito takes over from Takeo Fukui, who had been Honda president for the past six years. Unusually for Honda CEOs, Ito is not an engine guy. Instead, he climbed the ladder as a chassis designer and in the late 1980s was put in charge of developing the all-aluminum body for the groundbreaking Acura NSX supercoupe.

He has also worked in the U.S., where he was actively involved in the creation of the first Acura MDX. In 2007, Ito became Honda's COO for automobile operations.

Inside Line says: Honda over the past decade has grown to become a hugely successful world-class company, but still, many feel some of the Honda spirit of the past has been lost. With luck, some of that will now come back. — Peter Nunn, Correspondent

I hope with him at the helm Honda can recreate its sporty cars. Hopefully a new S2000, Integra/RSX, and Prelude will come back to the lineup.

+1. This is one of the best things that Honda has done for it self. The is no question in that mans abillity after seeing the S2000 and the NSX.

Expectations

Altho this does seem promising, I still have to remind myself that he has to answer to the same big wigs/shareholders & will be forced to do things that sell/provide profit if he wants to keep his job.

As great as the NSX & S2000 were, they did not bring in the big bucks for the company (if I am not mistaken, they actually lost $ on the NSX) but hopefully he will be better @ swaying the powers that be.

:werd:

The integra has to have been one of their most popular cars. I dont have the numbers but the things are everywhere..... to have it phased into the RSX and then just completely phased out seems insane!! what happened!?

Integra

A few years back Acura decided that it wanted to move up-market w/ its goals on being a Tier 1 product. That started by changing to alpha-numeric names (when the Integra became the RSX & I guess TSX) but then the RSX was dropped bc it was not deemed luxurious enough. Speculation also came that it was discontinued bc the Civic Si was a direct competitor.

The RSX really only needed a few updates like HIDs, navi, standard leather etc etc to move it up-market. A v6 or turbo would have moved it out of the Si's range. A final touch would have been the SH-FWD system from the old Prelude to give it that last bit of difference from Hondas.

I imagine that the RSX will return (perhaps as a TSX coupe) but Acura tends to be real slow on doing things so no idea when that will happen. Hopefully it will resurface like the Insight.

^Really good point. If I could get an updated RSX with HID, Navi, 6spd, I would take that over my TSX... No one makes a good 2 dr anymore...
