Hey yall. I have a 2009 Acura TSX, and i'm based in Seattle. I'm looking for an exhaust setup or a set of mufflers that will make the car louder, but not an annoy everyone in your neighborhood kind of loud, but loud enough, if you know what I mean. I am fine with a little bit of drone, but I do a lot of highway driving so if possible, as little as can be. (Car is all stock except for wheels)

I'm 18 and in high school, i do have a job but im not trying to break the bank.

Does anyone have any recommendations on:

  • A specific exhaust setup
  • Good budget mufflers i could use to replace my current ones
  • any good driver mods for the car

Thank yall!

When I bought mine, it had a weird exhaust system where the resonators had been cut out and a single muffler was in the middle. It sounded awesome but was too low to the ground. I ended up just cutting it out and have been running it like that since. Sounds great except a loud drony spot at 3k. Looking to get either some mufflers or resonators thrown in. I’ll probably experiment. Once I get my tax return I’ll be doing basically what I suggested you do.

How's the drone with it? I have heard theres some drone around 3-3.5k RPM. Heard it's bearable, but can get annoying.

Has anyone run a J pipe or quarter res on it?

Thanks for the feedback, i'll have to do some more research on what to do.

Are you currently running resonators? Or are you putting resonators in place of where the mufflers would be?

I've had several exhaust configurations, with and without resonators, using various performance mufflers. Every setup without resonators had drone, some more obnoxious than others. The resonators toned down the drone and reduced the loudness albeit to a lesser degree than a muffler. They made the exhaust tone smoother.

If you want a louder exhaust sound but not very aggressive go with smaller performance mufflers and keep your piping diameter as close to stock as possible. A longer resonator also helps reduce the exhaust noise and give a smoother tone.

Ultimately I got the exhaust sound I wanted, a little more aggressive than stock without being obnoxious. I went with a Tanabe Medalion Touring cat-back exhaust. They're a little more expensive than budget exhausts but not as expensive as other more aggressively known exhausts.

Could I add another res and delete my mufflers?

Or possibly replace my 2 mufflers with resonators?

Just trying to figure out best course of action. (Also thinking of muffler delete, and running a J-pipe to help drone)

That's what my plan is (running resonators in place of mufflers). I should mention that I'm not entirely sure what the stock exhaust setup is because it didn't have it when I bought mine. If it already has resonators, you're probably fine. Mine currently has cats only and is pretty bad at 3k, especially under load.

The removal of any muffler will give the biggest change to how loud your exhaust will be. Removal of the resonator will give a much smaller change. If you want subtle then the removal of the resonator can do that. If you want a much louder and aggressive sound then removing the muffler will do that. Since you have two mufflers on a stock exhaust the change of removing both can be dramatic, if that's what you're going for.

The tone and sound is very subjective so decide how much of a change you expect and let that guide you. The x factor will be whether each change will produce drone. That was the struggle I went through, going through at least six different configurations. Ultimately I got a nice aggressive, low tone sound and not too loud sounding custom exhaust but with one drawback. The TSX cabin is terrible in soundproofing. I've owned at least 5 tuned cars and they were all better at sound proofing. The sound outside sound was great but inside it was unbearable. I won't go into how much sound proofing and mass loaded vinyl I had to install. Like I said, it's a subjective thing but proceed in small steps if you you're not sure. Good luck!
