For Lovers of the Classics (on Wheels), the Season Begins

It's spring in earnest when collectors start dusting off their vintage cars and motorcycles, and the calendar for shows and race meets overflows. Here are some of this year's prominent events in the New York City area and across the country.

JUNE 5-6 Greenwich (Conn.) Concours d'Élégance, Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, 100 Arch Street. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day; $20 or $30 for both days; children 12 and under free when accompanied by an adult. On June 5: domestic and imported cars from 1900 to World War II, and domestic cars from World War II to the mid-1980's. On June 6: Concours Europa, with postwar European sports, touring and competition cars. Both days: contemporary exotics and vintage boats, motorcycles and planes. JUNE 6 Greater New York Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, Old Westbury Gardens, 71 Old Westbury Road. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; $10; 62 and older, $8; children 6 through 12, $5. Last year 418 cars were registered. Entries this year: unmodified cars, 1979 and older; the featured marque is Dodge. JUNE 13 Hamptons Concours d'Élégance, Sayre Park, Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton, N.Y. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; $25. Auto auction on June 11 and 12. Last year: about 100 cars in the show. Information from the Kensington Motor Group: (631) 537-1868 or www.hamptonconcoursdelegance.com.

JUNE 17-20 Sportscar Vintage Racing Association's Sprint Vintage Grand Prix, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Steam Corners Road, Mansfield, Ohio. Ticket prices before June 17: $10 Friday, $18 Saturday and Sunday, $24 for the weekend. No charge for children 12 and under on the grounds. Test day on Thursday, practice on Friday and qualifying on Saturday. Races beginning at 8:15 a.m. Sunday. Featured marque: Jaguar. Last year there were 290 vintage sports cars in 10 races. JUNE 19 Concours d'Élégance of the Eastern United States, Mountaintop Campus of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; $10; children 5 through 12, $4. A fund-raiser for the Burn Prevention Foundation. Last year there were about 130 cars, by invitation, in 9 classes. Featured this year: Rolls-Royce and custom coachbuilders. JULY 25 Concours d'Élégance at Cranbrook, Cranbrook Educational Community, 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; $25; children 12 and under, free. This year's theme: cross-pollination in European and American auto design; featured display: vintage pedal cars. Last year there were 170 cars in 20 classes. AUG. 1 Meadow Brook Concours d'Élégance, Oakland University, Rochester, Mich. 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; $20 in advance, $25 at the gate; no charge for children 12 and under when accompanied by a paying adult. Last year there were 283 cars, by invitation, in 15 classes. Featured this year: "A Celebration of the Golden Era, 1927-1942," Brass Era cars, Rolls-Royce, Chrysler 300's and Giotto Bizzarrini's designs. AUG. 13 Concorso Italiano, Black Horse Golf Course at Monterey Bay, Seaside, Calif. 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; $80 until Aug. 12; children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult. This premier show for Italian cars includes an auction and car corral. Featured this year: Ferrari and the 50th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
