Back to School / Pedestrian Safety

Maintenance workers will soon be removing the covers from school zone signs and children will be using the roads to walk and bicycle back and forth to school. As all drivers know, school zones will be in effect on regular school days during the hours and at the speed shown on the sign. If caution is exercised by all road users it will be a safe school year.

As a driver, do you know that young children do not see the world in the same way that you do? Their peripheral vision is not as developed as that of an adult and if they are not looking directly at you, they may not see you when you expect them to. On the other side of the coin, seniors' peripheral vision may be failing. If you are an older driver and do not scan the driving environment continuously, you may fail to notice the children making the situation doubly dangerous.

I.C.B.C. and Autoplan Brokers in some B.C. locations are conducting a Show Us a Sign campaign as part of the Safer Cities program starting on August 31. Bright yellow lawn signs stating "Please Slow Down" and "Please Slow Down - School Zone" have been distributed to schools and are available to the pubic. People participating in the campaign may borrow and place the signs on their private property, then return them for re-use next year. For further information, please contact your nearest I.C.B.C. claim center.

Pedestrian safety is a significant concern in B.C. Last year 2,300 pedestrians were killed or injured. To protect yourself, remember the Be Smart / Be Seen Pedestrian Safety Tips: dress to be seen, look in both directions, make eye contact with the driver, use crosswalks, don't jaywalk, if there is no sidewalk, always walk facing traffic and always obey all traffic signs.

Note: This column is based on traffic law for the Province of British Columbia current at the time of writing. These laws may be different in other jurisdictions.
