So ive been seeing these "shadow chrome" posts pop up here and there, and also ive been noticing the "plasti-dip" and "black out" posts as well where you guys use plasti-dip or vinyl to cover up the chrome window trim or the door handle chrome. Well I've been doing some thinking and I came up with an idea of using the "Shadow Chrome" on the chrome window trim to get a unique and different effect. what do you guys think ??? all in favor say YAY all against say NAY :p

I think it would look good if you can get it to work.
Problem with shadow chrome, is that it is very hard to get it to come out smooth and blotch-free.
Clean the trim with some isopropyl wipes (or it will show up weird in some spots). You need to absolutely make sure that you make even strokes, don't allow the tint to build up anywhere. Make long even strokes the length of the trim and spray from far away make very light even strokes. Allow coats to dry between as recommended.
Good luck, that stuff is so finicky.

I Love the 'Idea' - But would bet you $100 it would not come out as well as you would like.

I'm no master painter, but the Shadow Chrome is very particular with the 'degree' to how much opaque black spray you put down over the chrome. I did what I thought were light, quick, even sprays across my grill and they came out systematically light/dark every 6 inches it seems... PlastiDip doesnt do that in my experience, because you're not working with Gradients.

However, I would love to see this idea work and it would probably be really cool... Instead Im going to do flat 'Gun Metal' PlastiDip on my door handles and window chrome trim soon. Same thing for my wheels + Sparkle Silver Metallic and Gloss.

I just ordered that plastidip smoke, but it turns chrome into 'brushed aluminum'. It doesn't seem to tint it, just blur it?

Do it up and get back! Actually I'll try it out on some spare chrome and get back to you! (if you don't beat me too it)

Yeah i heard better things about Nightshade vs Shadow Chrome (which is wierd, i think theyre made by the same company out of Cleveland.)

That being said, ill be doing my chrome trim in GunMetal PD (with Glossifier perhaps?) soon. Ill post some pics as well soon. Good Luck!

Hey guys,

Hope this saves you some time and energy - that PD gunmetal looks awful, I have 3 full cans sitting in my garage, it looks like a light charcoal grey when dry, there are some folks online who have pics of it and you can tell its nowhere close to gunmetal color. What I ended up doing was using the PD gunmetal for a base and then painting the actual color I wanted (Graphite) over it several coats, this way you can peel it if you don't like it.

Stay away from that gunmetal Plasti-dip, it's awful looking!

yeah I read that too and was skeptical, BUT I got Silver Metallic and Glossifier with my kit, so hopefully it will come out looking a little bit better.. Like you said, if it sucks you can just peel it off, or better yet cover it in 'graphite'.

May I ask which type of Graphite paint you're using on top of it?

My car is Carbon Grey Pearl so I don't think 'grey' (vs gun metal desire) is going to be as bad.

You are correct. Niteshades is by VHT and Shadow Chrome is Dupli-color. Both are companies of Sherwin Williams (they have like 30 companies).
Nite shades is a translucent black while Shadow Chrome is a 2-can kit containing the tinted base coat and a clear coat. I have used them both and the nite shades seems to be a little darker formula. I am pretty sure that nite shades is a lacquer and shadow is an enamel. enamel will typically hold up better chemicals, abuse etc... probably why they market shadow for wheels mostly... But you could clear coat the nite shades and it would probably do just as well when used on chrome trim. The key is proper prep.:)
