Hey guys! Just bought myself a 2008 TSX Mt 6 Speed a few days ago (newbie here) and I was looking to install new mufflers.

I'm just looking to add some low end sound on the car and give it a "better" look (Without spending 1k on a new exhaust). I'm not a big fan of the oval mufflers, so I found some 4" MagnaFlow Round mufflers (#10416) and I I had a few questions concerning these:
1. Anyone have any experience with these ? From what I've read they aren't TOO loud and give a nice deep sound.
2. I can get 2.5 / 2.25 / 2 inch inlet/outlet. If I'm correct the exhaust pipe for the mufflers is 1.75 inch. That being said, which one should I go for and why ?
3. Should I order on Amazon or MagnaFlow's website ? I also need to buy hangars and 90 degrees bent piping since I don't want to cut anything from my OEM mufflers

Thanks for any advice in advance!

I haven't had any experience with their round mufflers, only their larger, oval ones. I found that only by discussing exhausts with a MagnaFlow muffler shop would I get the best understanding of what effects the mufflers, pipe diameter, resonators, exhaust design, etc. all had. Even then this not helpful if the installer has not worked on a setup for your exact car. I had a MagnaFlow custom cat-back system installed by a very experienced shop and it was hell. They worked mostly on V8s but said that the setups applied to smaller cars like my TSX- Wrong! They modified my system at least 5 times before I gave up on them and went with a proven cat-back system for TSX's.

I would suggest finding a shop with experience using MagnaFlow and hopefully has worked with TSX's to ask for advice. And it's better to start smaller than trying to go big and having to figure out how much to dial it back. I found that staying with piping close to stock and just modifying the other components (mufflers, resonators, tips) gave me the best low end growl that I wanted without being obnoxiously loud and droning, unless you are making large motor modifications.

Dang that sucks! What is the proven cat-back you got after the MagnaFlow ?
And alright I'll give a call at a few shops around the city and get some extra info. I've heard about staying in the same sizing for a better sound but I wasn't able to find out why exactly. I don't plan on making large motor modifications anytime soon (or anytime that is).

I went with the Tanabe Medalion Touring cat-back system. Slightly less aggressive than I wanted but still sounds pretty good. I really like how it sounds from the outside, low and growly and on the low end of aggressive. But it really shines on the inside of the car where I can hear my aftermarket sound system at normal levels. So I gave up a little aggressiveness for a whole lot of sound quality on the inside. I was almost there with my MagnaFlow but it was very loud in the cabin. I had to really crank up my stereo.

The larger you go with piping the louder your exhaust gets and more drone. You have to really increase your engine's output to offset it.

I heard a lot of good things about it and from the videos I've seen it sounds really good! After hearing it I looked up the price (1.2k-1.4k CAD) and almost got a heart attack 😅 But yeah hearing heavy drone day after day must drive you crazy, no wonder you switched.

Noted, I'm going to keep the piping stock for now.

Yup... The Tanabe Medalion cat back exhaust system is a work of art, as are all the high end cat back systems, but are extremely expensive.
...For virtually zero gains on a mild 1st Gen TSX...

If you just want to add a bit of exhaust attitude and burble to your 1st Gen TSX, just remove the 2 mid exhaust resonators.
Super simple and cheap, zero power gains, just adds a bit of exhaust note to your TSX.
Won't sound like a US$1000 cat back system but less than US$100 for any muffler shop to do.

I've had both mid-exhaust resonators removed on my wife's 1st Gen TSX for many years with no side effects.

Luckily I had expendable cash for a while so the Tanabe exhaust was a welcomed addition. If I didn't have the cash or even to save some bucks, removing the resonators is a great idea. Like CalgaryTSX said, it's a zero gain mod but like most people I did it to get the the 'sound' I wanted. And the sound gets nicer by adding headers and a HFC. It gives it a little more attitude.

Zero gains ? Well that's a bummer... Compensate in sound and look tho
I've seen a lot of videos with both of them removed but it sounds pretty raspy (Maybe just the video quality), did it bring up some low-end on your wife's TSX ? I thought about it but still hesitant. Oval canister ain't my favorite either 🤔

Just the resonator or mid-muffler with it ? Like I said, I heard videos but it seemed to be raspy. If I go the cheap route I'll have to get stainless piping also (Here in canada they put salt everywhere ffs).

To be honest I'm not sure what it will sound like because when I did it I had the MagnaFlow setup. It massaged the exhaust tone and did very little to the loudness. The biggest change to your sound/tone will be from the mufflers. Resonators make minor changes to how loud and how your exhaust sounds before the exhaust goes to the mufflers and undergoes the biggest modification to your sound and loudness.

Alright sounds good thanks for all the info! I'll be ordering the mufflers and everything in a few days. When it'll all be installed I'll be sure to post a few videos with the info!

To remove both stock mufflers and replace them with generic Magnaflow mufflers is not hard but time consuming.

If you don't want to modify the stock axle back exhaust system, unbolt the 2 mufflers at the Y connection in all one piece.
Then the muffler shop will have to fab up that flange and all the piping to the 2 mufflers, then fab up hangers, then 2 exhaust tips.

Very few if any muffler shops will have stainless piping and hardware, they will have aluminized steel pipe.
The aluminized steel pipe will be thicker wall than SS, paint it all up with VHT high heat paint.

All that is going to cost a bit... 2 mufflers plus the piping plus all the labor.
I would get an estimate on a couple muffler shops for all the labor before you order up any mufflers.
You may be approaching the cost of a cheapo SS cat back system.
Based on Litespeed's experience, I wouldn't go this route..

With the 2 Magnaflow mufflers installed but with both stock mid-resonators and the cat still in place, it should still be fairly quiet. Hopefully no drone.

If it's too loud or has drone, unbolt the Magnaflow custom axle back system and re-install the stock axle back system.
If it's too quiet chop out 1 mid resonator at a time!

Very good advice. You can always have the muffler shop just weld in the MagnaFlow mufflers if their opening's diameter is close in size to your oem piping. It will be cheaper but then you'll have to weld back in the stock mufflers if it's too loud and the welds might start looking a bit messy (very likely).

If it's too loud, CalgaryTSX' advice gives you the option of putting back the oem mufflers by just bolting them in. And then you can remove either or both the mid-muffler (oval) and resonator. Keep in mind that the mid-muffler has a larger effect on your sound compared to the resonator.

Make sure you drive your car on the highway after any change and before you make additional mods to see if you get drone.

I took the risk going full custom because I was on a knowledge quest with a four banger. I made plenty of exhaust changes on cars with V8s. Definitely avoid my route if you want to save, you don't really know how much it's going to end up costing to get a sound you're willing to live with.

I wonder how restrictive the stock 1st Gen TSX mufflers really are?

I recall a thread many years ago where a guy unbolted them, cut them open, modified the internal baffles, then welded them back together.
Not sure all that was worth it!

I have pictures somewhere of the 2 resonators that I removed from our TSX many years ago.
They are both straight thru, no restriction at all.

Just for fun, I removed the mid-exhaust resonator on our lame Honda HRV also.. :)
We got our used HRV for cheap, just use it for winter use only, keeping our 3 other vehicles out of the winter salt.
The HRV is totally gutless with a lame CVT trans and very mediocre build quality but that's the pricepoint.
It does have a surprisingly amount of room in it and gets way better fuel economy than our TSX.

Magnaflow typically isn't too loud, assuming the rest of the exhaust is stock. Buy wherever is cheapest.
