I'm putting my car in the garage for the winter (salty here in Indiana). My car has tons of scratches and a grey junkyard door. It needs painted. A body shop quoted me $5000 and Maaco quoted $1300. Is there an in between that someone if familiar with? Looking for a decent $2k paint job.

To do it right would require stripping the car of the bumpers, trim, etc. sanding down to the original primer, sealing any deep chips or scratches, build any thin primer back up, base coat, clear coat, cut and polish.

To do it cheaply, scuff existing paint, primer, base, clear. I’ve seen many “used car lot” cars with this sort of paint job (assuming what Macco does) and it looks terrible and doesn’t last. They mask around weather stripping and remove the most minimal amount of parts. That leaves a perfect dirty edge where the paint can lift and chip.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for especially if you want a lasting paint job.
