Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could have some assistance identifying the problem I am having with my 2005 TSX.

There is a rattling sound that seems to be eminating from the engine compartment. It appears when the car is warmed, in gear, and not moving. When I begin to accelerate the rattling disappears and reappears when the car returns to a stop. It is not present when I am in Park or Neutral, only Drive or Reverse. This problem started about 1.5 months ago and was very faint at first but has gotten progressively worse as I continued driving.

I have taken the car to my mechanic who initally thought it was the heat shield. It was removed. He then thought it was the timing chain, so he inspected it (I think he may have tightened it) but the problem still persists.

I should also mention some other problems I have noticed along with rattling that began around the same time. My fuel efficiency seems to have gotten worse, and there is alot of vibration when I first turn on the car.

What could it be?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Vincent

Wow

Thanks for your post! I could not have explained in any better way! It seems to come and go, but lately I find myself shifting into N at lights to make noise go away. EXACT same thing happening. Any updates/advice be appreciated as I'm not really up for spending on useless fixes lol.

well to start off you cannot tighten a chain lol. There is an auto tensor on it but you cannot adjust it as it is automatic. K series motors have a tendency to blow up from chain slap but the TSX is much less prone. If your out of time your valves will click and knock. I doubt you need a valve adjustment unless something got damaged.

A good mechanic wouldnt go from a heatsheild to the timing chain. There in very different locations. You best bet is to start the car with the hood open, and start trying to figure out where its coming from. Once you think you found it than thats where you can start replacing things or looking from broken or worn parts

Large 4-cyl engines with AT will always vibrate when you're stopped (just the nature of the 4cyl engine, you can search for idle vibration threads for more). This vibration is stronger on cold starts since your engine idles at higher rpms. While the car is new, your engine and transmission mounts do a good job at dampening this vibration, but as they age the vibration increases.
Now if you have anything that's loose in the engine bay, the vibration will make it rattle. So like tottenham said, once the rattle appears, put your park brake on and look under the hood to see what's making the noise.

Hi all, I get the same sound and vibration in my 05 AT. I have opened the hood and tried to pinpoint the sound without any luck for both me and a mechanic friend. I understand the nature of the I4 and its vibration, but the rattle is driving me a little nuts.

Ive had this problem for some while now, been also trying to figure out what it is. I am going to chane my chain tensioner and see if the problem persists. If anyone else knows about his, leave an update.

I probably wont be of much help, but the engine does move back a little bit when you put it in gear. If you are in Neutral and dont hear nothing then its possible that something might be worn out, try inspecting the engine mount and observe the heatshields on the headers down to the cat.

I have the same problem with my 04 AT! Hopefully someone comes up with a solution! Right now I have a whinning sound thats getting louder when I accelerate. Sounds like the transmission needs to be checked out or I have a bearing somewhere thats on it's last legs!

Hello everyone, I've been lurking this site for some time and noticed that I am not alone with this issue. I recorded a video while our TSX (2007) was doing the mystery rattle at idle. Is this what you are hearing?

The noise goes away when in neutral or park or if I slightly turn the steering wheel.

I had a similar issue, found the problem one day by total fluke. It was the hood rod grommet (where the rod pivots, not at the end where it goes into the hood). I always opened the hood and started looking around after propping the hood -- I never looked at the hood prop itself! A few bucks later at the dealer and problem solved. ;)

Don't you love it when its an easy AND cheap fix! If only that were the case all of the time...

i had a similar noise on my car. it was the stick that holds the hood up when open. it was really lose and rattling a lot when the car was on drive and at a stop. Didn't read it ur car was a auto or not but if it is, put it in drive, pull the e brake, pop the hood and see if thats what it is. hopefully thats what it is
