Hi guys. new to the the board. actually new to anything that doesnt include my old cobra mustang. anyway since i got older i decided to grow up and buy a nice car and save my back. so i got myself a tsx six speed. peppy car. but not a cobra. anyway love it. just want to get some more balls out of it! lol. anyway i want to get a short throw shifter and maybe a air intake assembly. i was looking on ebay but nothing catches my eye for a shifter. i dont want to make my rod taller by adding on the comptech piece. i am looking for an all in one unit. thats maybe even shorter in height and as close as i can to 50% shorter throws. anyone know of anyone selling this? or anything close? also i would love to to get a air intake assembly but i dont want that tin can sound. i am looking for something quiet but puts the numbers down if u know what i am saying. any all information would be great.
Thanks
Jay

Short throw shifters can and will be janky. You will get the odd grind into gear and more missed shifts. It may rattle a bit and not fully go into gear. What I mean to say is not to cheap out on your short shifter. C's, a Japanese company is known all over for making THE BEST short shifters for Japanese cars. EVER. However, they also got for beyween 200 and 300 dollars.
If you ask me, I would get some energy suspension shifter bushings, a nice weighted shifter knob and keep the stock shift lever. If not, do a lot of research (dont own a TSX so cant help you with whats out there) and dont cheap out. E.g. dont buy the ebay special.

Neuspeed and Comptech makes a short shifter adapter for the TSX. They are pretty much the same thing and attaches on the bottom of the shifter. Putting the adapter at the bottom doesn't raise the shaft. It just simply lowers the rod that connects to the shaft at the bottom.

I installed the Comptech short shifter a couple of weeks ago and I love it. My car only had 600 miles when i installed it. At first the shifting was a little bit notchy, but the more I drove my car the smoother the shifts got. I never had a problem misshifting on the TSX with the short shifter nor had problems with shifting with my TRD shifter in my celica. I think it only made the shifting more precise and the throws much shorter. I wouldn't want to change the height of the shifter because if its any shorter.. it would feel weird shifting because of the height of our arm rests. But that's just my opinion. Give the compech short shifter a try.. I'm sure you'll see that its an improvement over the stock one. For install guides and more comments on the shifter, I would look at the other TSX forum.

The Spoon shifter looks nice, def $$ though, as it's a complete unit.

I put on the Comptech a few weeks ago; couldn't be happier. Positve engagement, nice short throws, no grinding or issues of any sort, and the temps have been in the 0 degree F range lately.

Bufo thanks for the advice. i only got 1,000 miles on my car and i wanted a inch shorter rod but if i can get the throws shorter ill deal with the height...beggers cant be choosers ya know. anyways for 50.00 u cant beat the deal. i used to buy shifters for all my mustangs and the units were anywhere from 175.00 to 250.00 and the rods alone were 35.00. so i guess i cant be picky with this. thanks and my last question- was the install hard or just time consumeing. i can do it. i just hate taking apart stuff and than it never goes back the same way it came out ya know. hopefully thats just a ford thing. lol. anyways thanks everyone for there help

You're welcome. For the install, I think the toughest part is getting the center console off and then getting the plastic bushing off the button of the shifter. I just searched on this forum and saw this thread. http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5669&highlight=short+shifter.

You can take a look at that. As I mentioned before, there are some install guides on the other TSX forum. I would want to provide you links, but I dont' think I can link to that domain. So you'll have to look for it.

Oh, one more thing, if you get the comptech shifter, you should use the neuspeed install instructions because with the neuspeed directions, it doesn't say to remove a clip, which I heard is also a pain to remove. Hope that helps.

not intending to cause offence but if a short shifter causes gears to grind and fail to engage then the installation has probably been carried out incorrectly.

put simply the comptech/neuspeed short shifters are the simplest devices you can possibly get and do the job superbly. the overall height of the gear stick will not change but if you wanted it lower then there's nothing stopping you (once the console is off the car) from cutting the stick shorter and re-threading it.

02- thanks for the advice. i used to cut shit all the time in my mustangs- springs whatever- and realized things with this-its not the right way of doing it. im thinking if the throws are shorter with the shifter than im sure the pattern will be tighter so the rod wont bother me. i just feel sometimes like im driving a mack truck. i think im just used to a tremec or a t 5 mustang trans with a short throw shifter. the patterns were real tight. so thats what i want here. but for the money i dont think i can beat the comptech price. thanks though

nope. it really depends on the short shifter and the car. Ive seen about a 50/50 on this. Sometimes its just notchy, others itll grind gears like there is no tomorrow. All have been "professionally" installed in out shop. In reality its more of a coin toss then anything else unless you are buying top quality such as C's.
