I was under the impression that cupping was from struts being weak and the tire basically bouncing down the road at a rapid pace.

Not sure if it would cause MPG to drop from the back wheels hopping. I guess if it was offering rolling resistance it could.

The cupping IS caused by wheel hop. It could be a number of things including worn struts, loose bushings or linkages, unbalanced or out of round tyres etc.

Best thing to do is start by checking the things most easily and cheaply accessable, like your tyre pressures, then linkages, then checK your bushes. All of which cost nothing to check.

Then wheel balance etc.

You should have found the problem by then.

More than likely not :/ get the situation fixed and ask a respected tire tech what their opinion is.

New strut and that fixed it? Did you replace your tire also
I ended up selling that car lol. The quote was too much. Had 4 new tires and they were all cupped soon afterwards so it was the suspension. The tires will never be the same. Sounded like there was a bad wheel bearing all the time because of what was happening to the tires.

It's a good excuse to get aftermarket suspension though :)

Usually Mileage says it all. That mixed with cupping says that your struts are gone. The only real way is to take them off and remove the spring, I'm sure it will become very obvious that they are done. At that point you better have new struts laying there because your not going to want to put the old ones back on. OEM style struts are not expensive. Approx $50-75 a corner. Then you can get the spring compressor tool and some other basic hand tools and do it yourself. It will make a night and day difference in the handling of the car and stop eating tires.

You really need to check (or get someone in the know) to check your suspension components before you start going out and buying struts. It could be a loose bush or linkage.
Just get a local mechanic to put it on a hoist. It's a quick job to check for play in these parts, but you have to know what you're looking for.

As stated earlier, if it is the struts that are gone, OEM type KYB are cheap and if you're happy with the standard ride (which is actually very good) they are very robust and well made. So you should be able to replace the pair for about $100.

Yes, i know, i'm digging up an old thread.
We have an 09 with 100k. We run summer and firestone winterforce winter tires.

I put on the winters in dec/jan and the summers looked fine. We ran a few thousand miles on the winters and when i took off the rears, the inside tread on both rears was cupped.

I have always checked tire pressure through the winter. All suspension in the back is tight.

The left rear is pretty new as we had a few pieces replaced along with a link kit.

My assumption from the past is that the struts are worn and are causing the cupping.

It's probably your struts. My tires were cupped and I replaced my old Buddy Clubs that had 80k+ miles on them then replaced my tires. No problems since. It also might be the quality of tires too. I had cheap Federal 595's, then upgraded to Hankook Evo2's.
