don't fk with other types of coolants... might as well stay with the honda blue and keep the system consistent with one type of fluid.

Pssshh OEM Honda. It isn't too expensive and considering you don't change it often at all, it's worth it.

20$+ a gallon is actually VERY expensive, but it's worth it. The stuff I drained from my engine at 110k still looked good (I believe it was flushed at 60k)

Long life coolant is a wise investment

At 60k, I drained, filled and burped the system with OEM Honda coolant. I also took the opportunity to take out the reservoir tank and wash it out.

I also replaced the ECT2 sensor located at the bottom of the radiator 5k miles later, but that was unrelated lol.

FWIW, OEM coolant is cheap. I don't think Hondas have headgasket issues like Toyota did in the late 90's with using anything other than Toyota Red, but either way, stay OEM!

The question of coolant was much discussed on Usenet (rec.autos.makers.honda) in the late 90s and forwards; in fact I first raised the question there in relation to effects on timing belt life after I saw a warning notice at the Honda dealer parts dept. window about non-Honda coolant's effects on the water pump. The bottom line is that if you use a high silicate coolant, like regular Prestone, it will wreck the Honda water pump in as little as 15,000 miles - the pump I took out after observing belt stretch during a valve clearance check could not be turned by hand.

There are now "low silicate" coolants available in the aftermarket which may work but I will not take the chance. Spend a few extra bucks for the Honda Type 2 coolant and save yourself a heap of trouble later.

Final note: when I asked for Acura/Honda coolant at a local Acura dealer parts dept. the guy said "we don't use it - just get the green stuff" so you need to be careful about specifying Acura/Honda coolant if you have your car serviced at a dealer.

Prestone does not market a coolant by the name of "chameleon" so I'm not sure what you mean by that. The Prestone in the yellow bottle, circa 1995, blew a water pump in 15,000 miles or so. They may have changed the formula since then but would never admit blame in the first place so I will not touch it now.
