Ok you always here about "no contracts" with wireless carriers. Then you hear from people that you should avoid signing a contracts. But dealers always push you to sign them anyways. they offer incentives and credit toward new mobile handsets, because they want to garentee a customer basses and income stream.
A lot people don't know or simply just don't care.

When to avoid a contract:
When competition among wireless carriers is strong and prices are competitive or especially when they are droping, you do not want to be locked into a contract.
eg. Many people were trying to go over to CityFido from another carrier found they were locked into a contract and had to pay a haftey penalty if they violated the contract by cancelling their account. you probably see alot of people were running around with two phone or two phone #'s or just left one sitting at home.

When you should get a contract:
When prices are going up, or policy changes occurs, and you want to keep you original "deal" thats when you want a contract, because the contract not only binds you, but it binds the carrier also too the agreement you set when you opened your account with them.
eg. With roger accuiring Fido now, and the carriers hatting the cityfido plan, less compettiton now, you might be inclined to sign a contract to protect you from the changes Rogers is implementing to Fido

CASE Study
This is where you City Fido users come in again in this follwing example.
I have it from my sources inside microcell (some of this should be published deep in fido's web site by the time you see this post)

Your curent City Fido coverage that they tell you and sell to you rite now:

This is the unpublished map of the new reduced proposed coverage as of march 1st

Alot of people in Delta/Surrey, POCO, and Coquitlum are going to be very pissed off because

They are chaging a 50cent LD charge for when you using your city fido outside the new city fido zone!

also they limit the $45 city fido to 750 minutes only, and 30cent for each minute over or you have to pay $65 city fido for 1500 minutues again wiht 30cent per minute over
an the 50cent on top of that if you out of the city fido area! OUCH!

and theres more.. but need to go..ttyl guys :wavey:

*edit*
THis gose for you guys back east and central Canada

The original City Fido has been redesigned to meet the needs of urban users who live, work and spend most of their time in the city core, such as the area covered by the 514 area code in Montréal, the area covered by the City of Toronto’s 416/647 area codes, and the Vancouver, North Shore, Burnaby, New Westminster and Richmond areas of Vancouver’s lower mainland.
the same new rules appplies for you guys too, though your covage will be different

I will kill them because I don't think they can change the conditions in the middle of the contract period...

plus I live in Surrey so I am royally screwed if this happens
umm. this is real it will happen on march 1st

As long you have a contract and keep renewing it, they ccan't change it on you, they'll let you keep grandfathering the plan

so if im currently using the city fido plan i should be fine?
under what circumstances will i have to obey the new rules?
only if you don't sign the contract by the end of the year. even thou the new rules go into effect on march 1st, you should have to the end of the year to sign the agreement, but if i were you, i'd sign that contract as soon as posible incase they do change it on you, they'll probaly call or send you a letter encoraging you to sign the contract anyways
