Rear tire noise after lowering

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. After lowering with tein basics, I've noticed my rear wheels are making a strange sound. I'm not sure how to describe it but it sounds similar to when you're driving with a spare tire. I thought it might be from the negative camber but it's continued after having the ingalls kit installed and alignment done. The frequency of the noise increases with speed. It's a little annoying and haven't heard it from any other car. Any ideas??

my guess would be that the toe-in is off, but if you've gotten an alignment, that is strange.

Did you lower it recently or has it been a while? If it's been a while, your toe is probably off and has unevenly worn your tires (feathering) causing a loud hum.
Also what tires are you on?

How did it work out for you?

I'm having similar issue.

The worst thing is that I had my alignment set up around 6 times last year by 2 different shops, after I chewed up a set of Yoko S.drive 225 tires in the rear (they lasted 6 months after installing H&R springs with Ingalls and alignment. 2 rear tires got destroyed on the inside edge.) Well now 2 sets of S.drives later I am still with the tire noise (sounds like a busted wheel bearing) and a feather wear on both inside and outside edge (both tires set at around 32-33 PSI)....The toe measurements were .1deg both sides after the alignment.

Anyone having issues with tire feathering??

32-33 PSI sounds a little low for tire pressure. Usually your tires wear on the outer edges before the center when there is not enough air in the tire. Assuming you have your camber at 0, the only reason they would wear like that is due to low pressure. Put a few more pounds of air in them and see if that helps. As for the noise, more than likely it is the wheel bearing...... My Civic did the same thing right after I lowered it.

I bumped the pressure up to 34 today (the s.drive tires are really not load rated for tsx) I will see what happens. The ride was a lot rougher after the inflation. I have a BMW performance shop right next door and the owner took a look at the tires and said usually feathering like this is due to the toe being out or in; however, its both edges on my tire so he couldn't tell the cause. I have lifetime alignment at Firestone so I scheduled a visit tomorrow morning to get it checked out.

Funny thing is that my winter Dunlop Winter Sport M3's don't seem feathered at all?????? and they were on the car for good 4 months....It's really driving me crazy!!!

Thanks for your input Slips! I'll see if the inflation helps a bit.

Go to your car and run your hand along in the inside of the rear tire tread. It will probably feel lumpy, I'm willing to bet your toe is out. Tires get VERY loud once they are feathered.

yea done that...they are lumpy "feather wear".....but my toe was in spec 10 months ago and the noise started right after the alignment with new rubber..........it went away with winter tires......and now back to the road noise......i'm running 215 winter and 225 summer tires......

I've heard that it is best to run a tad bit of inward toe front and rear that way when the tire has rolling resistance and air resistance against the front of the tire the play in the rubber bushings are compensated for. That may be something you ask Firestone when you go in. If they can get it fixed, probably be worth the time and money to take it in to the dealer and have them check it out.

I had a similar issue to yours and I destroyed 2 tires because of it. After I lowered my car I brought it to the dealer for an alignment. Well they put it back at factory spec but it turned out that factory spec wasn't good enough and a local shop had to run a custom rear toe to save my tires. Thank god it worked and my snow tires didn't see the same wear my summers did. I'm getting ready to replace my summer tires with Falken 912's in the next week so I'm hoping that they hold up as well as my winter tires did.

That's what is happening....My fronts are good (even that the firestone just told me that the front is a little off and the rear is perfect) and the winter tires were good when I took them off a week ago. Now after a week of driving I can already tell that the tires are feathered on both edges! According to Firestone guy the rear toe is dead on factory spec! So I asked why are the tires messing up!? He said he doesnt know maybe because of a type of tire???......Do you remember what toe specs did the shop use when they did yours??? This is driving me nuts....The road noise is terrible!

Thanks Wreak!

man these threads are so lame
Dude they should ban you from this forum just because you are useless here. Look at your 3 red squares and your reputation. Why do you come on here and bash someone (me for instance) if you have no clue what the conversation is about!? I have lowered 3 of my previous cars 626/lancer/rsx.....I do all the work on cars myself from oil changes to timing belts! All cars were aligned right after the installation all with camber kits! That is why when I installed the tokico/H&R suspension (just because I liked it on my RSX 5sp) I added the ingalls to the rear! The car has been aligned about 8 times in last 2 years by 3 different shops! It all comes out in spec but rear tires are feathering!

if it was your wheel bearings the wheel would be loose form the hub off while in the air and wobble and be very juddering and harsh to even drive 5 feet with...
Well obviously your bearing will not do that over a day! You will start to hear noises first!

GET YOUR CAR ON A RACK AND ALIGN IT!!!!
Done that! Read my posts! :tardsmash

/ end thread...
You are an idiot! Don't log into this thread and read it!

I'll repeat myself again! You are an idiot! And you have to be the dumbest person I encountered on forums!

well since the rear control arms are aluminum there maybe something wrong with them, they could be bent... ever think of that?
Ingalls are not aluminum!

your tires feathered b/c your car was out of alignment and you more then likely waited to long to get one... your TOE obviously was out of spec
Look at the Picture! Rear toe is in spec! Genius!

it can take only a few days if your drive your car after you lower it with no alignment and out of spec toe to completely wear out the tire....
My first alignment after spring install was the following day in a shop .2 miles from my house. Genius!

buy some camber kits you ghetto broke joke... or a better camera, then search, and quit your bitching
Yea they are called ingalls. And there is a set of them on my car....read before you post back! Genius

and if you think that alignment is great you need to put your glasses back on, your specs should be equal all around... i bet you wer eimpatient and just slung your coils on... Corner Balance anyone?
Once again! Genius! Read before you post! Since you all up in corner weight! Why dont you show me how to corner weight my H&R Springs!:laugh: Genius!
